Member Profile: Howard Tong
In 1989 I was invited to join Rotary. in that year the Port Nicholson Rotary Club was chartered with 25 members. I have never regretted my decision to join. In 2007 I was Club President and since then have had numerous supportive roles in our region.
I am a 'Tawa boy' and went on to Victoria University and trained as a Primary teacher. In 1988 I moved into the Information Technology industry, finally working for 19 years at Datacom.
My interests include musical theatre, walking and in more recent years model creation using match sticks.
I'm married to Jenny and we enjoy time with family and, of course, our 5 grandsons. We love apartment living and all that our great city has to offer.

New Zealand’s Rotary Centenary year: News item from New Zealand 100 years ago:
Waikato times, 21 November 1921: Goats for New Zealand.
Mob landed on Somes Island. A consignment of goats came to land by the s.s.Matakana to the order of the Government. The herd, which numbered eleven, consisted of ten Anglo-Nubians, nine females and one male, and one female Swiss Foggenburg. Goats can be kept by anyone possessing half an acre of land. They can maintain themselves on roughage which cows will not look at, and, as they give a gallon of milk a day, they are a true friend to the poor man.
