Kia ora o tatou hāpori, I joined Port Nicholson in May, having been a past member and Past President of Rotary Club of Hangzhou for 3 years. I joined the projects committee in the hopes of burning all the good will I have with fellow hoteliers and hospitality friends on “doing good” through our club. My wife and I have settled in Karori, and look forward to visits from my 3 adult children and their families who all reside in Australia. I have gone back to school to learn Te Reo Maori, Im into my third semester. Its helping me remember my third form Te Reo classes !!!. I love Rugby Union, my wife reluctantly follows my passion from sitting atop Scotts College brickwall to watch First XV, to stopping randomly along Curtis street to watch kids run around on a Saturday morning (which in hindsight sounds a bit dodgy), to a growing passion for our mighty Canes and Lions. Whanau is everything to me, as it should be. Toku kaha, aku whanau, my strength, my family.

Nga mihi nui, Raymond

From the President

New Zealand’s Rotary Centenary year: News item from New Zealand 100 years ago:

Waikato times, 25 November 1921: Exterminating the Kea. Mr McCallum’s Protest. “The Harmless N.Z. Eagle”. Pronounced a Killer of Sheep. The old question of whether or not the kea kills sheep was before the House to-day. Mr McCallum (Wairau) asked why the Government was wasting money buying keas’ heads at 5s each when really this New Zealand eagle did no harm at all? The Minister for Agriculture retorted that the alleged eagle was a mountain parrot, and that his own experience as a Canterbury farmer had proved to him that the kea did kill sheep. Mr T.D.Burnett (Temuka) assured the House that his flock of 6000 sheep was reduced by 500 yearly by keas. He had seen the snow-fields stained with blood in high country owing to attacks by the birds.
