Join us at Changeover!

Wellington Club | 5.30 - 7.30pm | Wednesday 21 June 2023

Come and help us celebrate another wonderful year for the Port Nicholson Rotary Club and welcome in our new President Tony Robinson.

This is an evening to focus on Fellowship and celebrating Rotary.

Drinks and Canapés will be served from 5.30, with brief formalities starting around 6.

We will recognise the service of key Rotarians, and hear the exciting goals that our incoming President and Board are setting for the next 12 months.

Please register now, paying $45 to the Club account (see bank account details here or at the bottom of the bulletin each week). Spouses and partners are welcome to attend, please register them in the comments section when you complete your registration.

Registrations close 13 June 5pm.

Cost includes a beer, bubbles or juice on arrival and canapes. A cash bar will be available.

This week's Speaker:

Tony Herring

In November 2010, Tony lost his balance and fell a balcony, landing on his head. He was told by his medical team he was very very very very lucky to be alive - no less paralysed.

After a grueling recovery period, Tony started training for Marathons. Since then, he has travelled the world competing in all the "big ticket" Marathons - London, New York etc.

This week he will speak to us about one of his latest - and most challenging, surely - conquests, the Antarctic Ice Marathon. This race presents a truly formidable and genuine Antarctic challenge with underfoot conditions comprising snow and ice throughout, an average windchill temperature of -20C, and the possibility of strong Katabatic winds to contend with. Furthermore, the event takes place at an altitude of 700 metres.

There are no penguins or crowds cheering competitors along the route - no penguins live in the area the race is held, and runners have to rely upon themselves to push onward in the hushed, indomitable surroundings. Join us this week to hear Tony's story.

Tree planting TODAY - everyone is welcome!

We will meet at the Spicer botanical park at the top of Broken Hill Road (Porirua) and at the entrance gate to the Spicier landfill by 1pm (or a bit earlier). Vehicles can then travel in convoy through the locked gates of the Meridian Road up through the landfill to the top of the ridge line and the parking area.

There is no water or toilets on the ridge. Please come adequately prepared!

BYO spade and gardening gloves. Wear clothing appropriate to the weather including suitable footwear. Any food or thermos with hot water you can contribute will also be gratefully shared at a well earnt afternoon tea afterwards.

Fundraisers for our community

Interact film fundraiser

Interact are fundraising for the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust, planning to use profits to make departure packs to donate to the women to aid with their departures from the shelter.

Unfortunately it clashes with our changeover, but younger family members and friends may enjoy it, so spread the word!

Donations can also be made in lieu of attendance.

The next meeting will be on 14 June, at 5.15 for a 5.30 start at Level 6 Wellington Club.

This time it is a book for all of us to read - David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

Or the new version - Demon Copperhead

If you are interested but too busy, a remake of the film David Copperfield is on Netflix.

House of Grace Open Day

The House of Grace in Wellington is having an Open Day and we'd love to see you there.

This is an opportunity for you to take a guided tour of the home, meet the team and have a chat over a cuppa.

Joy is taking part in the Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign this year to help support Breast Cancer Foundation NZ's vital work. The money raised will be used to fund research projects and medical grants to help improve survivorship, as well as support patients and their families during treatment and recovery. Applications are now open for RYLA 2024 - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, a five day residential high energy programme to develop lower North Island young leaders between the ages of 18 and 24.

Please think about whether you know anyone who might be in the qualifying age group who shows leadership potential for this exciting opportunity.

From the President

Last week’s speaker, Stephen Wakem, was a great manifestation of how Rotary can and does facilitate change. Recipient of a coveted a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship, aligned to Peace and conflict prevention/resolution. Stephen has gone on to effect change in several workplace situations. Coming from a theatre background, communication skills helped provide a personal platform for delivery and his comprehensive training towards his Master's Degree in Applied Theatre at Goldsmiths in the UK with a placement in Malawi. Working in Prisons and with young people aligns with our own focus. Now working with MPI, confronting conflict there is a vital next role.

Seeing the uptake on Innovative Young Minds and the fundraiser towards this, along with the Interactors’ fundraiser, our ever increasing Lifting the Lid school recipients of funding towards counsellors and focus on Rotary’s mainstay programmes RYLA and RYPEN as well as diversity and inclusivity echo the quote of the week by Roosevelt last work of development of youth.

We can laud everyone in the Club for their various ways of contributing to these. Thank you to
all. Promotion of our work in all the areas above can only help address the inaccurately held image
that too many people hold of Rotarians being ‘pale and stale’. We all need to be ‘ambassadors’
to effect this image change, which also has the potential of increasing membership.
A challenge for us each of us individually and collectively.
