We've been to Matiu-Somes Island!
This week's "Perambulators Christmas" trip to Matiu-Somes Island was a rousing success, including a wander around the island, some good kai and good company, enjoyed by all.
They spotted some seagull eggs (right) - especially exciting as the Gulls were whirling and wheeling in the sky above.
President Marc bumped into Jean Phipps, the first female president of the Rotary club of Port Nicholson, who was on the island for the Rotary Club of Wellington Christmas party!

I am married to Jill and have four children and seven grandchildren. I have been a member of Port Nicholson Rotary for five years now and I especially enjoy the comradeship and contributions made to a wide range of community organisations. I have headed the Auction Committee for three years, where, despite Covid, we have managed to raise good money for significant charities. The community spirit at the Club is very much a main driver for me and now that I am retired I have the time to give back!

The final form of the Free Trade Agreement between New Zealand and the United Kingdom is still to be finalised with detail of the texts, a formal signing and the passage of legislation in the two countries Parliaments likely to take up most of 2022, the UK’s trade representative Colin Leeman told the club this week.

Waikato times, 7 December 1921: Something for Everybody.
“Newspapers, nowadays are a swindle,” said a man who liked a lot for his money. “Everything in them is condensed, cut down almost to nothing. They are not worth buying.” “I differ,” said another member of the company. “A modern newspaper, to my mind, is a marvel of production. Why, for a mere coin you get something for all classes of the community, the politician, the sportsman, the financier, the theatre-goer, the literary man, all are catered for. There’s something in it for everybody.” “Then whom does this interest?” asked the first speaker, pointing to the stop-press column, which happened to be a blank. “Oh, that,” replied the other “proves my argument; it’s for those who can’t read.”
The Rotary Foundation is Rotary’s charity of choice. The goal of the Rotary Foundation is to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, particularly for woman and children, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Examples of what our Clubs and District are doing include:
a) immunising children in the Pacific
b) improving the health of millions of people in Bangladesh
c) developing a global grant project to improve orthopaedic surgery in Tonga
d) supplying equipment for the Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital,
e) establishing a satellite Citizens Advice Bureau in Cannons Creek, Porirua,
f) supporting a New Kiwis club in Palmerston North
g) improving facilities for Riding for the Disabled in New Plymouth.
The Clubs in Rotary District 9940 (we cover the lower North Island) have donated over $1,516,000 to the Foundation since 2010. And the great news for our District is last year we reversed a three year decline in donations by improving by 33% the amount we gave in 2019.
As part of this, our Club has donated upward of $105,000 over the 10 year period. This places us as the second largest contributor to the Foundation amongst the 48 Clubs in our District. Number one being the Wellington Rotary Club with $136,000. We should be very proud of this contribution as it reflects the great generosity of our members.
