Sunday was a fabulous trip from Paekakariki toTaihape and return on the historic steam train, raising funds for Polio. We stopped at various places along the way, picking up more passengers. We had more than 100 Rotarians plus also Steam Incorporated people enjoying this trip.
We were encouraged to bring along a picnic basket of goodies and many did. There was also a food car available. At Taihape the Taihape Rotarians had arranged some outings for us which was great.
Professor Michael Baker was on board the train and he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by former District Governor Gillian Jones.
In all it was a great occasion, and hopefully one which will be able to be repeated. If you missed it this time, perhaps next time will be a great opportunity!

Cathy Knowsley
In 2014, Nic and Lucas – two 20 year-old guys in Brisbane, Australia built a free mobile laundry van to help people in their community doing it tough. They spread to New Zealand and now
provide people experiencing homelessness with access to free laundry services, warm showers and genuine, non-judgmental conversation, across New Zealand.
The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community. Meet Cathy from Orange Sky at our meeting this week.

Whether a monarchist or anarchist, no one can deny that the late HRH Queen Elizabeth II personified Rotary’s primary maxim of ‘Service above Self’. All of us have memories of the Queen, either of personal experiences, or favourite ones that have been seen one way or another. Her role-modelling for women and leadership have been powerful and enduring. Our deep sympathy goes to her family.
With one of our immediate focuses being on preventing Polio, thanks go to Joy and all those who participated in the train trip. For those who could not contribute in this way, the Bacon Butties event on 27 October is on the horizon.
Thank you Louise, for listing the upcoming activities of the Club. It is certainly impressive and helps in deciding where you wish to participate and interact. Comments on this and other facets of the Club can be made our survey.
At our next meeting, as has already been stated and outlined to us by DGE Wayne Gordon, we will be making the significant vote to approve the pilot to rationalise the structure and governance of Rotary within the New Zealand/Australia and Pacific Islands region. If you are unable to be at the Meeting, please e-mail me to lodge your vote. We are required to have 2/3rds majority of the Club in favour to register our approval of this.
Enjoy the week, which may even end up as ‘maskless’!
Rotary has served us well over the last hundred years. We're now looking to how we can create a sustainable future.
We need help to ensure that Rotary thrives in our region. It may be that the regionalisation pilot we have been invited to participate in is the answer being searched for.
DG-Elect Wayne Gordon spoke to the club on 31 August about this pilot. The video he presented, and a website for more info is in David Barnes' report.
Richie Hill from the Paper Street Tree company spoke to the club on 24 August about the need for collaboration between local councils, businesses and the community to get good solutions to issues like climate change.
