This week, Marc Rands handed over a collection of dry pantry supplies for some new Refugee families starting their new life in Wellington. Thanks to all Club members who contributed to these supplies, they will give a head-start to people arriving in Wellington from unsafe home countries without much.

" I was one of 20 people who attended the club lunch on Tuesday. Attendance dropped sharply during Covid the president told me and hasn’t recovered. However the club had just run a quiz night and raised 1800 pounds. Members are mostly old white males but not completely so. For lunch soup and lasagne were served but ran out before everyone had some. There was also some pizza savouries, rocket salad and bread. Hot drinks were available."

Journey to The Galapagos
Recently, Linda managed to take a pre-covid planned holiday with Craig and some friends to the Galapagos Islands, an Equadorian archipelago of volcanic islands located 906 km west of continental Ecuador. The Galapagos is world renowned for its unique and fearless wildlife, and their contribution to the inception of Darwin's theory of Evolution by means of natural selection in the early 1830s.
In addition to Linda's presentation, we will be presenting the proceeds of our recent Charity Auction to The Malaghan Institute, The Wellington Children's Hospital and The Wellington Homeless Women's Trust, to support their ongoing work in our community.

Time to get festive!
As we approach the festive season, its time too think FOOD!! The “Original Rotary Christmas Pudding” (in a tin) uses only the best fruit, spices and wholesome ingredients to a time-proven recipe that everyone loves year after year. These make great gifts for old and new clients, and a delicious desert throughout the year!!
Each pudding bought for $23 includes a $6 donation to Rotary projects and community projects in our area.
As you prepare for Christmas, please consider a gift for the young women at The House of Grace. Gift vouchers (e.g. for Kmart, Farmers, New World, Countdown, petrol), non perishable food items for hampers, and stocking fillers like lip balm, nail polish, scrunchies, hair clips, sun block, small cute stationery items will be most appreciated.
Bring them to our Christmas party on 7/12, or bring them to Rick at a weekly meeting prior.
We have some special aprons for sale, right in time for BBQ season! They are length adjustable, have a large pocket and are branded as advertised above, with the Rotary Logo. Get in quick for summer!! They cost $30, and all funds raised will go to End Polio Now.
More thanks to Hayley for distilling and presenting the results of the Club Survey. For those who had thoughts to discuss, either as a result of the Survey, or anyway, there will be another opportunity. If you want to bring them up straight away, feel free to share them with me.
Much appreciation to Joy for continuing her unstinting work with Kahurangi School, especially in relation to the Dictionaries and Books in Homes. Great to hear that Jeff Lee is still doing reading with children there every second week.
In striving to eradicate Polio, it was a saltatory reminder hearing that one comment a volunteer received from a younger person was: “What’s Polio?” Most of us knew of people with it when we were children, or how the lasting effects could be manifested. Explaining it might be necessary in order to extract donations from some!
An update on the Christmas Puddings, we actually retain $6 of the $23 per purchase for your Club’s activities. Thanks to Hayley for being the point of contact for these as well.
On Christmas, as well as registering for our Christmas dinner on Wednesday evening 7 December, remember to bring items as listed for the House of Grace mothers then…or earlier if you cannot attend that event. Rick is kindly collecting them and taking them out there.

Dr Swee Tan spoke to the club on 2 November about The Gillies McIndoe Research Institute's ground-breaking research relating to strawberry birthmark, and the potentially enormous implications for the treatment of other tumours, including cancer.
