Roger Beaumont, CEO New Zealand Banking Association spoke to us about what Banks are doing to reduce the impact of scammers.

This week’s speaker was Roger Beaumont, the CEO of NZ Banking Association, and he spoke to us about “How banks are trying to prevent scams”.

Roger gave some interesting Statistics on the amount of money lost though scams worldwide, 200mil – 2 billion significant amounts of cash!  He went to say that the range was so wide caused by the number of unreported scams, probably due to the embarrassment of the victims.

Roger detailed the different types of scams:

  1. Investment scams
  2. Phishing scams
  3. Romance scams
  4. Emergency scams
  5. Invoice scams
  6. Identity theft scams

Lots of different types for us as banking users to navigate but Roger had some valuable advice for the likes of our members:

  1. Never give anyone your bank credentials
  2. Don’t rush to make any payments online
  3. If anything, encountered online, looks fishy then it probably is!

Thanks, Roger, for your advice we will all be safer online if we follow his advice.
