We had an excellent presentation from His Worship the Honourable Andrew Little who  join us for an early start to his busy schedule. He shared his vision for the city.

Mayor Andrew Little says a lot

We were honoured to have the Mayor of Wellington, Andrew Little, join us for an early start to his busy schedule during which he shared his vision for the city and pertinent comments on its current state. Most significantly, he advised of his fiscal prudence and evaluation of all projects. With so many having financial blowouts, and unrealistic time frames, Mayor Little has already demonstrated immediate impact through his significant reduction of the budget for the Library Opening Festivities.

He talked about looking at how to maximise spaces like Takina, and completing projects, including the cycleway from Petone to Miramar. He also talked about pausing to reassess projects, including the Golden Mile.

He spoke of rates, the effects on air b’n’b owners, water metering, and other contentious issues. These were addressed with very measured responses. He raised the sludge issues affecting the South Coast and acknowledged the discontent of all affected, especially local businesses and beach recreationalists, admitting the timeline is beyond his control.

He talked about the culture in the Council and debating chamber, and emphasised that he is aiming to create lively debate around his Board table of Councillors, while retaining integrity. This appears to be working and a relief, given its modus operandi over recent years.

Mayor Little addressed questions from members on several topical issues as well. All in all, his time with us provided reassurance that the City is in sound hands.
