Citizens are better off – basically there are flags on the beach and the lifeguards make people safe if they swim between the flags. In the 2023-2024 season, there were no
drownings of people who swam between the flags.
SLSNZ has been in operation since 1910 and has been a Charity since that time. The organisation began with 4 clubs: Lyall Bay and Worser Bay in Wellington, New Brighton in
Christchurch, and the Pacific Bay Club in Hawkes Bay. Now the national association represents 74 Surf Life Saving Clubs across Aotearoa, 4,500+ volunteer surf lifeguards who
patrol at over 90 locations through summer, from Ahipara in Northland to Oreti in Southland.
Up until the 1970s and 80s they used rescue tubes and reels, when inflatable boats were introduced. Nowadays jet skis and drones are also being used.
Charlie talked on several topics: to enlighten us the information was clearly illustrated and explained on the attached photographs.

Some points of interest:
When they work with Police on a search and rescue situation the SLSNZ is paid.
They have quite a lot of first aid situations around city beaches e.g. Oriental Parade. People injure themselves on the land not in the sea.
BP and KFC are their main sponsors.
Drowning statistics show that 87% of drownings are males between the ages of 45-55 years.
During Cyclone Gabriel the SLSNZ was a great help but it exposed a lack of equipment in times of emergencies.
