RCPN meeting attendees were treated to a wide ranging talk from one of its own illustrious and very high achieving members Rob Whitney this morning.
Dr Rob Whitney was born in London before crossing the border to Cardiff, Wales, for schooling and part of his university study - the latter shared between University of Wales
(degree), Essex University (PhD involving Industrial Chemistry) and Freiburg West Germany (Post-Doctoral).
In 1972 Rob migrated to NZ initially working with BRANZ (Building Research Assn) where his first project was to look into reducing the timber required in house construction.
Since then innumerable positions & directorships have been taken up - bookended by energy research and research management. International conferences have involved
significant travel and adventure - if luncheoning at Chernobyl is ones idea of a desirable adventure.
A PHF (Sapphire Pin) recipient Rob was a charter member of RCPN and President 1999- 2000. He emphasised in his view the primary benefit of Rotary was its people and reiterated
a famous JFK quote (reworked) – Ask not what Rotary can do for you but what you can do for Rotary.
Rob is technically retired with hobbies including a 2 day pw 24/7 job and home/family/watching football - order of priority was not made clear.
