Our speaker this week, Jack Rainey from the Restaurant Everybody Eats, began by talking a little about our food system. The dichotomy is that New Zealand produces more food than our population can consume yet one in five New Zealanders face food insecurity every day.  Too much of the food we produce is wasted and goes to landfill and its degradation creates greenhouse gas and harms the planet.
The factors that contribute to food insecurity are well known so it was refreshing to hear Everybody Eats contribution to the solution to the problem. With two restaurants in
Auckland and one in Wellington (upstairs corner of Dixon and Cuba), Everybody Eats was established as a charity to take food that would otherwise go to waste and turn it into
restaurant quality fare and make it available at a price people feel they can afford to pay. This means someone able to pay $50 for their three-course meal might be sitting next to
someone only able to pay a little. The restaurant is open Sunday through Wednesday, everyone is welcome and it’s easy to make group bookings online.
Jack’s passion for Everybody Eats was very clear, not only because of the quality of delicious meals they serve night on night, but he is passionate about the benefits of community and connectedness that are enjoyed and shared by patrons, volunteers - chefs, waiters and kitchen staff alike. So much so that there is a waitlist for volunteers!
Each evening the restaurant is open the chefs essentially do a Masterchef Mystery Box challenge designing the days menu around what food is brought in from supermarkets,
cafes and manufacturers creating just one menu and potentially serving 160 meals.
Jack acknowledged the generosity of their landlord who makes their rent available at cost. But there are still overheads to cover so patrons who are able to pay a little extra for their
meal, are encouraged to do so. Everybody Eats is now also offering a catering service – maybe something to consider for your next office function. https://everybodyeats.nz
