Our scheduled speaker was unwell and Carol Green, DG Elect for District 9940 stepped in at short notice. We were able to hear a little of Carol’s distinguished professional career. As Head of the Department Cytology at Valley Diagnostic Labs she was at the forefront of the breakthrough that identified that HPV was the cause of cervical cancer. She worked alongside the pathologist who wrote the textbook that provided the diagnostics training. Carol travelled to Chicago twice yearly to run his workshops for him, therefore no surprise that one of the projects she is spearheading as DG is looking at funding HPV vaccinations in the Pacific.
Carol has been on the Steering Group of the Rotary redesign pilot in the region: Zone 8 – New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. This has been a big commitment of weekly zoom meetings over many months but she saw it as an opportunity to be close to the reform discussions when the old Rotary rule book is being challenged. Rotary, like most volunteer organisations around the world needs to adapt. The focus has been on how can we revitalise Clubs and the District.
Options for small Clubs to come under the umbrella of Mana Tangeta are being considered, to support their administration and governance obligations while allowing
them to maintain their autonomy in their community activities and project investments. You can read more about this at https://creatingtomorrowrotary.org/resource/why
The same pilot is underway in the United Kingdom and Ireland, but there, they limited the scope to just membership. Carol considers that a prudent decision!
DG Elect Carol encouraged us to remember to put Rotary out there – let everyone know what we do. Young ones invite friends, older members invite your kids! She would also welcome ideas to inform her leadership of Rotary’s future.
