Port Nic Gardeners Let's get out there and have some fun. We all enjoy our annual rolling up of sleeves, donning of gumboots and having lovely time making our auction recipients gardens look fabulous. This year we will be doing some weeding on a completely flat garden in Golf Road, Heretaunga - an easy 20 minute drive from the city. Nothing too strenuous at all (this time!). We will follow this with a light lunch and a cuppa. Some of you golfers may well be keen on going for a round afterwards. |

This week our speaker is Grainne Moss CEO Ministry of Regulation and ocean Swimmer Born in Northern Ireland and now living in New Zealand, Gráinne Moss captured the attention of the world in 1987, becoming the first Irish woman to swim the English Channel, at just 17 years of age. Moss’s story is one of resilience, endurance, and achievement, both as a swimmer and in public life. Moss’s achievements in 1987 heralded the start of a truly remarkable open-water journey. From victories in Ireland’s open-water championships and the ‘Irish Triple Crown’, Moss has broken records and pushed the boundaries on what Irish swimmers can achieve. Her accolades are not confined to Irish waters, either. In 2001, Moss became the first Irish swimmer to swim the notorious Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South Islands, as well as conquering many other well known channels. Since calling New Zealand home, Moss has built a career as one of the country’s most senior public servants. The same qualities that carry her through bitterly cold seas have shaped her leadership on land: endurance, clarity of purpose and a willingness to take on challenges. Fellow Members
As I mentioned this morning, we have another great opportunity to help the community. The Mary Potter Hospice is holding their annual street appeal between the 14th to16th of May 2026. We have been allocated Chaffers New World on the 14th between 7am and 6pm.
RCPN has supported this appeal for several years and again we are asking for volunteers. Our location is the New World at Chaffers Wharf. The spots are one hour in duration, starting at 7am through to the last shift which finishes at 6pm.
Mary Potter is a great cause and one that has touched us all at some time. If you can spare an hour for this great cause, please get back to me either by phone or email (see below) with the time you would like to volunteer. I have attached a sheet so you can see what the time slots look like.
Many thanks for contributing to this great cause \.

OpenStar Technologies Ltd
OpenStar facility, office space of NZ based team, fully commissioned fusion prototype machine "Junior"
Evening Visit
Plus Drinks and Nibbles
Wednesday 20 May 2026
6.00 - 7.00pm
OpenStar is a fusion energy startup. Fusion is the same process that powers our sun and all the stars in the universe. It's an extremely powerful source of energy that produces no long-term waste and has no risk of meltdown. The catch: it's notoriously difficult to facilitate on Earth.
OpenStar is one of around 50 private companies globally developing machines that are capable of facilitating fusion reactions to yield base-load electricity. Of these 50 or so companies, OpenStar is the only company developing the levitated dipole concept. When visiting our facility, you'll see our fully commissioned prototype device, Junior, that has shown the world our unique and unmatched capabilities.
It's totally okay to have minimal knowledge of their work - that's what they are going to show us! Any and all questions are welcomed on the visit, and they will do their best to answer them.
Registration: Please register yourselves by Sunday 17 May 6pm so we can let them know how many people are attending and so they know how many to cater for. You are welcome to bring a guests if you wish - but you maust register them.
Cost: Please also bring $15 cash per person on the evening to cover the cost of drinks and nibbles.
Parking: Please park on the street, not in the carpark. All spots are reserved and their neighbours can get a but cranky when their spaces are stolen !!!
Helpful info: Closed toe shoes required.
Looking forward to seeing you at this interesting evening. Remember there is no morning meeting.
Dont forget to register - best do it now

Jul 12, 2026 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Let’s plant more trees! Sunday 12 July - 1pm to 3.30pm Please join us for our annual tree planting on Sunday 12 July at 1.00pm with The Friends of Tawa's Bush Reserves for our eighth year. We’ve already planted over 5200 trees in total! This year we will be in Caribbean Drive Reserve (Tawa) a bit further up than last year so there will be a bit of walking from where we park our cars to get to site. Tree planting regenerates our native Bush to provide habitat and food for the increasing numbers of native birds, provides walking areas for us all to enjoy, and helps slow down climate change. This is open to everyone including family and friends so please invite lots of people to help. Interact and Rotaract members are very welcome to join us so please let them know about this opportunity. You don’t have to be super fit to join. There are many jobs you can do such as: digging holes; planting trees, setting out trees for planting, picking up the tree packets for reusing, and / or contributing to the afternoon tea. If you would like to take part, please accept this invitation by Monday 22 June and provide your contact phone number and email address. Also advise details for family and friends attending. Lisa King is coordinating the Club’s participation and can be reached on 021 265 6220 or email lisaandmalkingnz@gmail. Lisa will be in touch with further details toward the end of June. Postponement date will be the following Sunday. See you there Lisa |
