31 May Meeting at the Wellington Club Speaker: Guy Ryan Guy will be bringing new CEO, Devon Murphy-Davids as a guest Guy Ryan founded Inspiring Stories in 2011. Guy is an Edmund Hillary Fellow, and was awarded Young New Zealander of the Year in 2015. Guy has led Inspiring Stories since inception, including the development of our big Festival for the Future, the Future Leaders programme, The Impact Awards, and Inspiring Speakers.Guy will be talking to us on "Providing a platform to promote young people doing great things" Guy grew up in Granity – a tiny town on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. After finishing High School his passion for adventure and surfing took him to Otago University, where he completed a double degree in Commerce and Design, and then a Masters in Science Communication. It was at University he discovered his passion for entrepreneurship – from trying to build tech company, to creating an adventure festival, to co-founding a film production company and winning international awards for filmmaking.
In 2010 he co-directed and produced a film called Carving the Future, a 25-minute documentary about four young New Zealanders taking action on climate change and environmental issues. The film won Platinum Best Film at the Colorado International Film Festival, was one of three finalists in the world for the BBC’s Best Newcomer Award, and was a finalist for Best New Zealand Film at Reel Earth.
Building on the lessons of previous ventures and the success of the film Carving the Future, Guy founded Inspiring Stories in 2011, initially winning a ‘World of Difference’ scholarship from the Vodafone New Zealand Foundation. The next few years would become a whirlwind adventure of developing and testing programmes, partnerships, and building the organisation into the phenomenal force it is today.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeeting.

Let’s plant trees to help our planet! Sunday 4 June 1pm I hope you can join us for our annual tree planting on Sunday 4 June at 1.00pm. The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson has teamed up with The Friends of Tawa's Bush Reserves for the sixth year in a row to plant trees in the Forest of Tawa, on the western ridgeline of Tawa. We will meet at the top of Broken Hill Road (Porirua) at the entrance gate to the Spicer Landfill by 1pm. Our goal is to build on what we have done in the last five years – over 2400 trees in total! We will continue planting native trees in Tawa to regenerate our native Bush to provide habitat and food for the increasing numbers of native birds, to make lovely walking areas for us all to enjoy, and to help slow down climate change. This is open to everyone including family and friends so please invite lots of people to help. Interact and Rotaract members are very welcome to join us so please let them know about this opportunity. Tree planting is for everyone. You don’t have to be super fit to join us. There are several jobs to choose from or you could do some of each such as: digging holes; planting trees, setting out trees for planting, picking up the tree packets for reusing, and / or contributing to the afternoon tea. There are lots of ways to contribute and everybody is welcome to come along. If you would like to take part, please accept this invitation and provide your contact phone number and email address. Jun 25, 2023 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
We will gather at our house (47 Homewood Ave, Karori) and leave and return from there. Sheryn and I completed the walk last week and it takes about two and a half hours. Starting at our house, we climb for about 45 minutes and then head down to the 800 year old Rimu. From there we take a track around Otari to Karori Cemetery and home.
The walk is approximately 7.5kms and the route is of medium intensity, with stairs and plenty of roots along the way. We would suggest boots are an essential and walking poles highly advised.
When we have all returned we will have coffee/tea/pastries etc at our house (if you would like to contribute bakery items it would be welcome)
If you would like to join us, please respond to me at davidianshack@gmail.com

28 June 2023 Meeting at the Wellington Club SPEAKER: Deirdre Tarrant This will be the first meeting with our new Club President Tony Robinson at the helm. Join us to welcome him into his new position, have a delicious breakfast and listen to our speaker Deirdre. Her bio is as follows: Deirdre Tarrant is the name all Wellingtonians associate with dance – whether it was as a student attending the famous Cuba St Dance studios or participating in the School’s Arts splash, or through watching her students perform at Chinese New Year or at the Christmas Parade. Deirdre Tarrant has made dance accessible and fun to Wellingtonians for generations. Born and bred in Wellington, Deirdre danced with the New Zealand ballet company 1963-1965 while she was completing a BA at Victoria University. After finishing her degree, she left NZ to dance in London. On her return, Deirdre established Tarrant Dance Studios in the heart of Wellington’s busy central shopping district. RAD member since 1960, Deirdre was also a vocational Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance for over 30 years. In 1985, Deirdre established Footnote New Zealand Dance – one of very few ongoing professional dance companies in NZ and its longest running contemporary company. As Director for 25 years, Deirdre grew the company to one that not only performs internationally but is also known for creating and commissioning bold new work by NZ artists. Deirdre has always sought and created opportunities for a wide range of artists and innovators, New Zealand choreographers and composers and established Choreolab for that purpose. Choreolab is an important annual event in the Wellington dance calendar and provides an opportunity for graduate dancers to participate in three weeks of classes and workshops with experienced dancers and choreographers, as well as introducing them to other aspects of the profession through talks by composers, representatives of the funding bodies and creators in other sectors of the performing arts. Deirdre has always been a strong supporter of the RAD. She was instrumental in the fundraising for the Genée in 2012 and is a founding member and Chair for RAD NZ’s scholarship programme – the 14+ Dance Scholarship Foundation – since its inception in 2002. Deirdre was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for ‘services to dance and the community’ and a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013 for ‘services to contemporary dance’. She was one of the first Distinguished Alumni to be appointed by the Victoria University of Wellington in 2006, and was awarded a Wellington Council person of year Absolutely Positively Award in 2012. Our annual fundraising efforts with other Wellington Rotary Clubs to raise money to go to End Polio Now - Rotary International's global efforts to end Polio for good.
World Polio Day is on October 24th, and we will be holding our Bacon Buttie Stall at Wellington Train Station the following Thursday 26th.
We need support from volunteers with a range of activities to make the morning a success: - Setting up the gazebo, tables, and BBQs - Prepping food - buttering bread, cutting onions - BBQing bacon - Serving the public - taking money in exchange for fresh hot DELICIOUS butties - Shaking buckets and drawing public attention - gathering donations from passers by who aren't hungry but still want to contribute - Cleaning up and packing down at the end of the morning
Last year was an awesome success, and this year we hope to raise even more money to go towards vaccinations and surveillance efforts in those countries still affected by this awful disease. Our donation will be matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, making this a very worthy cause to donate some time and effort to.
Please consider whether you can help on the day - donate some money or some time, by signing up to our schedule of volunteers.

Our next Flashback Friday is at Choice Bros - Bar and Eatery 62 Guznee Street Te Aro Looking at their write ups, here's what they say.... Choice Bros is a Bar and eatery and home to Choice Bros Brewery. It is a small brewery and tap room with a focus on experimental, innovative and thoughtful beers. It is located down a private ally at 62 Guznee Street. Every core range beer brewed at the Ghuznee Street brewery comes inspired by a classic Bowie tune and is music matched to boot. The American diner-inspired menu has enough fried chicken for Gladys Knight. Branding is important for these folks, and each Choice Bros can is designed by Head Brewer Manaia Hunt himself; you’ll see the designs are anything but monotonous. If you’re looking for something a little edgier in style, check out the not-so-core range, also influenced by classic tunes of other artists. The relatively small size of Choice Bros allows for flexibility when jamming out a new seasonal, so keep your ears pricked every month for the new pick. Sounds like fun!! We are booked for 12pm Friday 3 November. Please bring friends and family. Click the link - register yourself and register your guests. Please can you ensure all registrations are in by 1 Nov, 9am so I can let them know our numbers.

Rush Family Car and Motor Bike Collection Feilding - Sunday 26 November “The Rush family collection has to be seen to be believed” A couple of months ago I visited this collection of vehicles and memorabilia and was amazed at the items on exhibition. There are some very important cars from N Z motorsport history as well as many others of great interest, and an incredible collection of books, photographs and other memorabilia. Terry Rush was one of the people instrumental in getting the Manfeild Racetrack built back in the 1970s. https://nzv8.co.nz/2018-12-11-preserving-motorsport-history-the-rush-family-collection We will take a leisurely drive to Feilding (approximately 2 hours from Wellington). Proposal is to arrive at the Museum by 11.30am for talk and tour that will last about an hour to an hour an a half. Tea and coffee will be provided by Terry and Joy Rush on arrival at the Museum. We will then stop for lunch on the way back at a venue yet to be arranged but possibly the Woolshed Café on the Himitangi Straights. If anybody has any other suggestions let me know. A great day out with friends and a chance to take that special vehicle for a bit of a drive, or an opportunity to admire someone else's. Cost for the tour is $20 per person (including $5 to Club projects) payable to Peter Whittington on the day in cash. Meet at the Tawa Countdown Supermarket carpark at 9am for a 9.15am start. We may schedule other meeting points on the way depending on where people are joining from. Come along for a great day out with your Rotary friends. Family and friends are all welcome. Don't forget to include any family and guests in the registration. Here is the intended route including lunch at the Woolshed Cafe (happy to consider other options so let me have suggestions). https://maps.app.goo.gl/z5WneqdiRbmc9FdY8 RSVP no later than 22 November 2023
