Fellowship and Fitness in (very) Fresh Air!

A huge thank you to Peter, Noel and Barbara who organised a fantastic weekend away for a small group of Perambulators this weekend.

So far, the sun has shone and the views have been incredible.

It has been a great example of the 'fellowship' arm of Rotary membership, connecting with like minded others, enjoying the outdoors and getting some fresh air!

On Friday afternoon, we climbed to (and from) the Waitonga falls.

Saturday's trip started at Horopito (about 17km north of Ohakune) and traversed the historic Old Coach Road back to Ohakune via the Hapuawhenua Viaducts.

Today's mission will incorporate a wander along the Mākōtuku River, in Raetihi before a light lunch and scenic drive home.

Guy Ryan

Guy Ryan is the founder of Inspiring Stories, a Kiwi charity with a bold vision to back young people to change the world, working towards a more inclusive and sustainable future with every generation.

Over the past decade more than 13,000+ people have taken part in their programmes. They have invested more than $2M in-kind into scholarship support, and have awarded more than $100,000 in funding for young New Zealand’s most inspiring young changemakers to amplify their impact.

Guy is an Edmund Hillary fellow, and was awarded Young New Zealander of the Year in 2015. Guy has lead Inspiring Stories since its inception, including the development of our big Festival for the Future, the Future Leaders programme, The Impact Awards, and Inspiring Speakers.

Come plant some trees - you can make a difference!

The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson has teamed up with The Friends of Tawa's Bush Reserves for the sixth year in a row to plant trees in the Forest of Tawa. We will meet at the top of Broken Hill Road at the entrance to the Spicer Landfill by 1pm.

Our goal is to build on what we have done in the last five years – over 2400 trees in total! We will continue planting native trees in Tawa to regenerate our native Bush.

This is open to everyone including family and friends so please invite lots of people to help.

Tree planting is for everyone. You don’t have to be super fit to join us. There are several jobs to choose from. There are lots of ways to contribute and everybody is welcome to come along.

Port Nicholson Rotary’s Changeover

Wellington Club | 6 - 7.30pm | Wednesday 21 June 2023

Come and help us celebrate another wonderful year for the Port Nicholson Rotary Club and welcome in our new President Tony Robinson.

It will be a great opportunity to learn of the exciting goals that our incoming President and Board are setting for the next 12 months. We will also be recognising the service of key Rotarians.

Canapés will be served from 6.15 during the formalities. We will let you know the cost shortly.

We've been meeting Wellingtonians

Thank you to Eden and the other volunteers who have recently spent some time at the Sunday markets, meeting locals, talking about what we do as a Club, but importantly also finding out what Wellingtonians see as priorities for action in and around our city.

We look forward to hearing what you have learnt and being part of the new directions this will take our Club's actions to support the community

From the President

The funeral this week of Mike the Magician, who sadly perished in the Loafers Lodge fire, is a salutatory reminder of the difference Rotary can make. Rf our current primary recipients of funds - providing care for less advantaged – cf Wellington City Mission, for homeless – cf Women’s Homeless Trust, cf Life Flight New Zealand – rescuing those in need of assistance of whatever kind, as well as hearing via Eden and our fellow Rotarians at the Market, relaying the comments on enjoyment the arts brings to the vibrancy of this city, wrap up a variety of what Port Nicholson Rotary embraces.

Add to that, the aspects of personal wellbeing of our members, whether the camaraderie of the perambulating groups in Ohakune right now, of others each month, the book club meetings of mental edification, or sharing theatre or beery lunches, there are many reasons to encourage others to join!

Then there are the excellent guest speakers – thanks to Heather and Tony, including this week’s, Guy Ryan, on inspiring stories of those creating inventions and challenges, to maintain employment once AI usurps many of the conventional roles. More of these qualities, and others, can be seen at the Shakespeare Festival at the St James on Saturday and Sunday during the day at the St James by either paying to see the creativity with which the young people confront age-old issues, and freshly disclosed ones, or to assist at our table there. It is encouraging to see the ingenuity and innovation of those on whom many of us are becoming more and more reliant to provide our ongoing health and wellbeing – not to mention superannuation!

Keep being involved and embodying all for which Rotary stands. Thanks to those who help facilitate it, including Hayley, assisted by Paula, who help communicate what is happening, with such thoroughness and aplomb.

Small Change, Big Difference

Father Frank Bird visited our club on 17 May to talk about the Marist mission working to overcome the "social timebomb" that comes with the severe lack of education on refugee camps internationally. Globally, 70% of refugees do not receive an education, 20% only receive primary schooling, and 10% access education beyond age 12.

If you want to support a Burmese refugee student to access education for one month, you can do so for only $20.
