Well!! Back to L2. This does not affect our breakfast meeting on Wednesday but please take the necessary precautions and each of us play our part.

A good number of our members and spouses attended Stuart Young’s memorial service at the Breaker Bay Community Hall on Saturday. It was a very moving memorial and I took the opportunity to pay tribute to Stuart on behalf of Port Nicholson Rotary. He was an extraordinary man who embodied all the qualities of a true Rotarian.

Following on the heels of the well attended social dinner at Great India Restaurant on Tuesday, a decent group of members and spouses gathered for a drink and lunch at Panhead Tory Street on Friday. Thank you to Louise for organizing it. Social events are an important part of strengthening our fellowship so look out for more to come over the coming months and join in fun and joviality.

Kaicycle Composting (who spoke to us on 27 January) have extended an invitation to members to a Compost and Community event they are co-running with the Sustainability Trust on Sat 6 March, 11am to 1pm. It is an opportunity to learn about how to do good composting in your garden as well to learn about Kaicycle and the work they do. Kaicycle is about sustainable gardening and I urge you to attend if you can, Covid-19 lockdown rules permitting. Cost is $5 which you can book by clicking on the link here.

Mana Tangata (People of Action) a book written by Stephen Clarke is a rich illustration and lively history of Rotary’s prolific first century in Aotearoa and the Pacific and to remind us of what Rotary has achieved over the 100 years. It will be officially launched on 12 May. We have ordered a box of 12, all of which have been committed to by some of our members. If you have missed out and wish to purchase a book ($55), you can do so, click on this link.

Tomorrow 1 March marks the official end of summer. Let’s hope we have a pleasant autumn!

Guest Speaker - Bee Dawson

The Legacy of the Plimmer Family lives on
John Plimmer, the father of Wellington whose image is preserved with that of his dog Fritz in Plimmer Lane spawned a range of other Plimmers, and celebrated author Bee Dawson has written a book about one branch of the family and is getting ready to do another.

She came to the club this week to talk about the Rangitikei Plimmers who hired her to prepare a family history about their side of the family and the agri-business that they have built.

Bee said that one of the standout heroes of the Plimmer clan was Clifford Ulrich Plimmer, (unsurprisingly known as CUP) who started as a stock and station agent, rose to head Wright Stephenson’s and merged it with various businesses to create Challenge Corporation which then morphed into Fletcher Challenge, in its day a giant firm by New Zealand standards.

Cliff Plimmer, she said, was hard working and clean living, “a workaholic who loved people, and built a business empire, but was a poor father.”

The book has many stories, including a touch of scandal in the form of a bigamous marriage about a hundred years ago. Bee said that the Plimmers didn’t generally regard themselves as nice people, so that their various spouses over the years shared the description of “improvers.”

Her book is lavishly illustrated with family photos and other farm shots by Wellington photographer Chris Coad.

Perambulators....
Rotary 100 Baton Walk

The District has obtained one of the centennial batons that are to be used to symbolise the journey and the story of Rotary in NZ over the past 100 years.  The act of carrying the baton on these paths is an opportunity for local Rotarians to become part of an acknowledgement of this piece of our history. DG Gillian has also arranged for the baton to connect up with the opening night of the District 9940 conference in Greytown on Friday March 19.

The baton is being 'run' from Wellington airport to Wellington train station on Saturday March 13, then 'walked' up the Hutt Valley on Sunday 14 March which is where we/Perambulators/Port Nic members come in. The baton is to be eventually carried into the conference in Greytown on Friday19 March.

We are offered a pan-Club opportunity for Rotarians to join the Rotary walk on Sunday March 14. Rotarians should gather at the Avalon carpark, off Fairfield Dr, at 9.30am.  It'll take around 2 hours - that's a nice leisurely pace, time for coffee/lunch at the Fig Tree cafe and a ride back to the cars on the train.

Actually I'm not complaining because I am a Senager (Senior teenager). I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. I don’t have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I don’t have a curfew. I have a driver’s license and  my own car. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant. And I don’t have acne.

Life is great.

I have more friends I should send this to, but right now I can’t remember their names.

Now, I’m wondering: did I send this to you, or did you send it to me?
