Goalsetters a big success

The Goalsetters’ breakfast last Friday was a huge success. More than 90 people attended, many friends of the club, spouses and partners of club members were there, along with our special guests, the three awardees and their whanau.

Our guests seemed impressed by the occasion. Many thanks to Jane Patterson and her team, Paula, Jeff, Richard for the selection of the awardees and the organisation of the event, and also to Julian for doing the printing.

The sponsors this year were all from the club, members and partners, Ian Paterson, Linda and Craig Wellington, Jeff Lee, Nicole Barker and Mark Radford. A very big thank you for making the awarding of three scholarships possible again this year. Great generosity and very much appreciated.

The whole room gave generously in the sergeant’s fine. Jane deposited $458.10 in the bank today, almost enough to send a student to Business Week next holidays.

We may soon have two new members: applications from Tony Robinson and Greg Lewis have been received. Tony’s has been approved by the board and is with members.  Greg’s is with the board and almost certainly will be approved for circulation to members.

Bev Wells is the incoming President of the club in July this year. She and I have met to discuss arrangements for changeover – likely to be in the first week of July.
Bev will run a session for club members to set out her goals and to get feedback and input from members. That session is scheduled for the meeting of Monday 21 May. Please mark your diaries now.

Next week we are back to normal with a meeting on Monday 26 March when we will be hearing Tamaris Livera give her new member talk. Then there will be another break with the following Monday (2 April) being Easter Monday, so the next meeting after 26 March will be 9 April..

Refugee support

The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson is looking to support the settlement of refugees that arrive in Wellington, in co-ordination with the Anglican Cathedral. Club members are invited to help provide dry pantry items for refugee families, roughly six times a year.

We have been provided with a list of 20 items to source for the refugee family's pantry pack, which work out at around $100 for a family of four, but if split between five, would be only $20 each, or you may have the items in your own pantry that you might like to donate.

The next family will be arriving in April, so if you would like to take part, let me know and I will allocate the items between those interested, and arrange to collect the items on Sunday 22 April.

If any Club member has any house hold items/linen that they would like to donate to the refugees, please contact Patricia Cooper (Anglican Diocesan Refugee Resettlement Co ordinator) on patricia@wn.ang.org.nz

Tree Planting

As part of the District's goal of planting a tree for every club member, the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve on  Sunday June 10th 1:30 p.m.

The plan is to have an afternoon starting with a picnic lunch (BYO) and then to do some tree planting.  Afterwards we could do a short walk to admire ours and previous planting in the area, and Interact and Rotaract members are welcome to take part.

If you would like to take part, please contact Lisa King (lisakingaling@gmail.com), who is on the committee of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating the Club’s participation.

We’ve regularly taken part in the Blood Pressure campaigns where we work with St John to provide free blood pressure checks at supermarkets (that’s coming up again in October.)

Right now they want volunteers for shifts at the New Worlds in Thorndon and Chaffers and Miramar, and for Countdown in Kilbirnie.

Round the vines
The Port Nich Perambulators had a great day out with 14 participating in the Round the Vines event followed by a BBQ at Linda and Craig's house.

Funnies

I scared the postman today by going to the door completely naked.

I'm not sure what scared him more. My naked body or the fact I knew where he lived.
