What an impact ...

In its first 12 months 'Lifting the Lid' has

-Raised $32 000

-Enrolled 6 secondary and 3 intermediate Wellington schools in the programme

-Helped 31 young people with mental health issues

-Run a programme for affected parents

-Set up a youth worker to help young people

-Brought the schools together so they can learn from one another

-Enrolled another 6 Rotary clubs to the support the programme

'You guys rock'

The schools are incredibly grateful for this support and the way in which the funding is so readily available.

Can't wait to see what the team achieve in year 2.

Wellington Mayor -Tory Whanau

Tory Awatere Whanau is the first person of Māori descent to be mayor of Wellington. She will talk to the Club on "Challenges for Wellington". This will be a great opportunity for us to to hear Tori's thoughts as she navigates the intricacies of her new position.

Timetable

Tori's expected arrival is 7.30 and she needs to be at a 8.30 Council meeting. We will start the meeting promptly at 7.00 so we have finished our breakfast by the half hour allowing maximum time for the Mayor’s words of wisdom.

Thoughts from President Tony

'I am hope'

The article that really took my attention this week concerned Mike King’s Charity ‘I am Hope’. Knit World customers throughout Aotearoa joined forces to knit more than 2500 buggy hope bears to support children’s mental health.‘ The knitting community’s overwhelming generosity left us in awe as the boxes of bears arrived at our office from all over New Zealand,’ King said.
‘The buggy bears are the perfect reminder of our children’s innocence and vulnerability reinforcing the importance of advocating for their wellbeing. Every child deserves comfort and support in their time of need and their voices must be heard and valued.
Auction Items
Thank you to the good people who have been bringing various items along to Wednesday meetings to help fill the mystery bags at our October 6th auction. Every little bit helps so please check at home for something that could be used. Vouchers and bottles of wine are popular. As winter weather has kept me off the links, I have some golf balls to take out of the drawer!
Casino night
Jill and I are looking forward to coming to the Casino Night on Saturday 19th? Are you coming? It is a fun evening and everyone is a winner.
More excellent speakers...
On Wednesday we look forward to welcoming our mayor Tory Whanau. I hope there will be good time for respectful questions as I for one am very interested as to how we can get Wellington moving again.
Our breakfast attendance has been very encouraging as we recognise what an excellent list of speakers we have had for some time now. See you next Wednesday!

Books on different world cultures and sports. Thanks to FIFA we have experienced 32 different cultures in NZ over the month and sport brings us together in competition and celebration.

Come along with books to share and to discuss. If you are reading a new book bring that along to share

The challenges and opportunities of AI

Artificial Intelligence isn’t going to go away; in fact, it’s just going to get bigger and bigger Asa Cox of the Wellington tech firm Arcanum told the club this week.

He quoted an estimate from consultants McKinsey and Co that it would add between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion to the world economy over the next decade.
