We've awarded our Goal Setters!

A huge congratulations to Piper Kilminster, Oliver McCullough, and Ella Skudder who were our Goal Setters recipients for 2022.
Thank you to the organising team, you once again arranged a lovely event.

~ This week's speaker ~
Duane Kale
Raised in the sunny Hawkes Bay in New Zealand, Duane was an able bodied, competitive triathlete, until 1990 when his life changed. Having had a fall off his bike during a training session, he was put on heavy pain medication and advised to rest. 18 months later a neurosurgeon recognised that something was medically amiss and found a benign spinal tumour in his back. At 22 years of age, an operation to remove the tumour resulted in partial paralysis.

Incredibly, he made his Paralympic Games debut just five years later – competing at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games where he won a staggering four gold medals, a silver and a bronze.

Duane will be speaking to our club about sport, politics, and societal change.

The importance of being...persistent!

When it comes to building a business, Ralph shows us how persistence, capital, good ideas, good contacts and even more importantly, even more persistence is essential to success. Ralph is the CEO of Lifetime Retirement Trust.

Ralph has also been the Chief Executive of both ACC and AXA, the GM Marketing and Strategy for Tower Insurance and Marketing Director at Jardine Fleming. He spoke to our Club about "The Trials and Tribulations of Commercial Innovation".

Saving our native species, seed by seed.
About one in four world plant species are endangered, creating urgency to preserve and find artificial ways to protect them. This was the sobering message from Karin Van Der Walt, Conservation and Science Advisor for the Wellington City Council at Wellington's much loved Otari Botanical Gardens.

David Barnes reports.

What can we do? Karin specified that the team always need volunteers, and money for new scientific equipment, as WCC do not see this as part of their remit.
Please reply to the editors with your ideas and if you would like to be a part of our Club supporting Karin, Otari Bush and their mission

From the President...

What a very special event the Goal Setters Awards was. Huge thanks to Richard, Jane (even though 19k kilometres away), Tori (for your reading as well!) and James.

All who heard the stories of the recipients, and the very impressive
achievements of Guest Speaker, Paula Tesoriero, were moved and inspired by the adversities and challenges they have overcome. Goal setting was firmly at the forefront of where they are now. This included Paula winning a Gold Medal at the Beijing Paralympics, through to being appointed the Disability Rights Commissioner. We congratulate and will keenly follow the new recipients’ trajectories.

Having last week mentioned the spread of polio in Asia and Africa, it is alarming to hear it is now also in London and New York. All the more reason to get involved in our contributions, one way or another, to the End Polio Campaign. The train bookings can still be made. See how in this Bulletin.

In the meantime, thanks to all who are addressing our carbon credits through tree planting, and Lisa King for coordinating this with the Tawa Rotary Club, and organising the first fine days for ages!

Our first Board Meeting this week…and look out for the Club Survey coming soon.
Have a great one.

Rotary's Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
