Courtney

In December 2019, she became the youngest chief executive to head The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. She is a board member of Arts Wellington and the Wellington Performing Arts Trust, and the immediate past chair of the umbrella group Museums Aotearoa.

She has also worked as an arts correspondent for Radio New Zealand's "Nine to Noon" program since 2010. We look forward to welcoming Courtney to our Club meeting this week.

Wednesday 19 April
Guest speaker Peter Boshier
Chief Ombudsman for New Zealand

37 students applied for 2023 Goal Setter awards and the panel has selected 10 to be interviewed early March. From this, 4 outstanding students who have shown they can set and achieve goals, have faced significant challenges in their lives and have given service to their community will be awarded $4,000 each. At the time of applying they will be in at least their second year of study in a Wellington Tertiary institution.

The presentation breakfast will be held on Wednesday 19th April at the Pipitea Marae and Function Centre on Thordon Quay. Peter Boshier will be the guest speaker and each of the recipients will speak briefly on their story.

Tickets are available from Richard for $70 each (or $700 for a table of 10).

If you need further information please contact Richard or Jane.

From the president...

Talk about the ‘summer of our discontent’. In just watching the horrific effects of the rain in Auckland, although not in Wellington, as we virtually all have family/friends/were going to be up there for
whichever event…our very best thoughts go out to everyone who has/have been affected. We will advise of any ways to assist via Rotary.

On the other side of the world, as we have heard, Kiwi Andrew Bagshaw’s body has sadly been found. The family asked for donations to those helping in the various refugee and aid schemes. I am involved
in assisting to coordinate a performance to raise funds towards this and will advise of more details when more formulated, should anyone wish to attend.

On donations, Anne Hare reminded again about the opportunity for Port Nic members to raise funds for our Club by simply enrolling to be an ‘encourager’ and ensuring the safety of participants between 6am and 11am on 19 February, during the Round the Bays Walk/Run. Each volunteer will earn the Club another $25. Talk to Anne as soon as possible – details in this Bulletin.

More on which to muse. We hear our Guest Speakers (including John McDermott, following his
stimulating talk) talk of how impressed they are with all we do as a Club. This is also an endorsement of how attractive we could appear to a potential new member. A challenge to bring someone in the next 5 months who might be one of these.

Note that we have our Club Forum on 15 February, at which points you want to discuss, thoughts you wish to air, ideas you wish to suggest are welcomed. Results of the Club Survey, on which Hayley reported late last year, will spawn some of these.

Meanwhile, this week CEO of Te Papa, Courtney Johnston, will be our Guest Speaker, focusing on
management of its collections – including what is not on display.

And so the second 12th of the year begins – and maybe some more summer!

Covid-19's impact on the Economy
Dr John McDermott, well known NZ macroeconomist, addressed the club on 25 January with reference to the things that can happen in an economy when external events such as a pandemic can drive consumers, businesses, governments and central banks to react in different ways.
