Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 21 June 2018
  President's Message

I am conscious that my term as President is nearly over – only one more morning meeting and then changeover.

It has been an honour and a pleasure to serve, and I am very confident that the club will continue to grow and do good work with Bev Wells as President.

We have a changeover function at Foxglove Bar and restaurant on Monday 2 July at 5.30pm. This will be instead of the normal club meeting that morning. The cost is $30, which covers room hire, four rounds of nibbles (all tasty stuff) and entertainment. There is a cash bar. Foxglove has a very good selection of wines and beers. It is going to be a good night.

Your board is meeting this Monday, and if there are matters which members would like to raise for discussion, please let me know. I am still keen for any feedback people might have about the Wellesley as a venue, particularly as we are going to be there at least once in July.

One matter that the board will be discussing on Monday is the criteria we should use for making people honorary members of the club. The category exists in the Rotary structure, but we have not used it very much.

At present we have seven honorary members – three of whom are long standing former members who want to keep an association with the club – Bob Moffat, Andy Curran and Roger Halliwell.
The other four are the runner Melissa Moon, violinist Ben Baker, Jenny Flanagan Tong who used to do our newsletter and helped Howard a lot in his DG year, and Neville Jordan, who has been an important benefactor. We have had a close association with all of them at different times over the years.  I’ll let members know the outcome of the board’s discussion.

Tina Schirr, Business NZ Energy Council (BEC)

BEC is a member of the World Energy Council (WEC) as a vehicle for think-tanking, connecting, reporting and developing policy in the Energy space.
The focus of Tina’s presentation were the findings from the 2018 World Energy Issue Monitor (WEIM). The WEIM highlights priorities in the energy sector with an accelerating transition towards the 3D’s relating to New Zealand:
digitalisation eg. key energy/power consumers being AI, data and Internet of Things
decentralisation
decarbonisation - the goal!
Tina is an energy expert, having worked in the energy industry in both Germany and New Zealand. In a nutshell, she collects the data for New Zealand, collates it, analyses it, and compares it to Global trends identifying the tricky issues that need work on and looking at what energy will look like in the future. She prepares the energy policy looking at how energy issues affect our population and solutions to those issues.
The WEC is a global and inclusive forum for thought-leadership and tangible engagement with headquarters in London. Its mission is 'To promote the sustainable supply and use of energy for the greatest benefit of all people'.
The World Energy Council is the principal impartial network of leaders and practitioners promoting an affordable, stable and environmentally sensitive energy system for the greatest benefit of all.
Formed in 1923, the Council is the UN-accredited global energy body, representing the entire energy spectrum, with more than 3000 member organisations located in over 90 countries and drawn from governments, private and state corporations, academia, NGOs and energy-related stakeholders.
The World Energy Council informs global, regional and national energy strategies by hosting high-level events, publishing authoritative studies, and working through its extensive member network to facilitate the world’s energy policy dialogue. [unashamedly copied from their website!]
In the Asia-Pacific Region WEIM reports on the impact, urgency and uncertainty of 42 energy issues compared with other countries.
Tina concluded by talking about the 2018 Asia-Pacific Leaders’ Summit at Te Papa on 31 October and 1 November this year. The theme of the summit is “3D Vision – New Energy Perspectives’.

Bishop Eleanor Sanderson

The club was fortunate to have former member of the Club now Assistant Bishop of Wellington Eleanor Sanderson speak at our Meeting on the 11th. It was an inspiring morning where she covered her history with Rotary and the current connections between Rotary as an organization and Diocese.
Eleanor was introduced to our Club when she studied through a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study Development Studies at Victoria University. These scholarships bring people from all over the world together to promote international understanding and good will.

She spoke about how Rotary and the Diocese have strong parallels such as the core theme of service above self. Indeed there are activities such as the goods sorting, done by the interact group and the Church that show the two groups working together towards the same goal.
Rotaract Request

Rotaract is organising a screening of Incredibles 2 at the Embassy Cinema in Wellington CBD on the 22nd of July for deserving children and their families. Rotaract Wellington is a charity organisation run by young people in Wellington looking to affect positive change in their communities, attached at the end of this email is a document with some further information on this. We hope this evening will be a night of fun for these wonderful people as we are planning many fun surprises; children from the Central Regional Health School, the Wellington Children’s Hospital and from schools around the Wellington Community will be receiving the tickets to attend the screening.

We believe this event provides these children and families with something they may otherwise not have gotten, a few hours just to be kids and to enjoy a wonderful movie in a way that brings the community together.

In order to make this happen for these children we are seeking business sponsorship for tickets - all money raised will go back into the Wellington Children’s Hospital in order to further a good cause in our community. The tickets will be sold in batches of two or more to ensure the children can bring a guardian, tickets are $16 each and prices are as follows, this can be invoiced to your business:

2 Tickets $32             3 Tickets $48             4 Tickets $64                         5 Tickets $80

We have picked this cause as we feel it brings the community together, both families and businesses in a wholly positive way; this is something we know you understand. If you wish to sponsor tickets for these children please let us know of the number of tickets you wish to provide, we also offer the option of providing the tickets to a deserving family that you or your company may know. We offer sponsors the option of being featured on all promotional material for the event and advertising material distributed in goodie bags.
Cheers,

Perambulating Kaukau

Ten keen walkers set off from Woodmancote Drive on Sunday for a 3 and a half hour ramble around Mt Kaukau and nearby hills. We were treated to a nice fine day although the heavy overnight rain made the tracks a little slippery. There were some great views of the South Island, Wellington Harbour and the surrounding hills. Coffee and lunch afterwards at Cafe du Parc was a just reward for our efforts.  Rick
