Club profile: Dawn Sanders

Hailing from Blenheim, I moved to Wellington at 14 to pursue a career as a ballet dancer, rising to Principal in [Royal] New Zealand Ballet and dancing in a company the UK.

I have continued to dedicate my life to the arts in most genre, including in teaching, lecturing, management and governance roles since late 1976. I joined Rotary in 1996, as a result of giving talks on the Globe Theatre Hangings Project, of which I was Project Manager. This year we are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ, which I founded as a result of this project and am still CEO.

I have held several Board and other roles in Rotary, with ‘kick-starting’ young people being a major focus, and am honoured to be President Elect.

Schooner Ashore. Wreck on the Kermadecs. Captain’s Long Journey. 750 Miles in a Ship’s Boat.

Captain Neil Murchison, master of the schooner, Columbia River, entered Suva harbour at 3.30 yesterday afternoon in a ship’s boat. He reported that the schooner was wrecked on Sunday Island in the Kermadecs at 4 o’clock on the morning of September 8, while bound from Auckland to Portland. The ship ran right ashore, and is a total wreck in a safe position. The captain landed stores, and then decided to come to Suva for help. He stared on September 11 for a voyage of 750 miles in a ship’s boat with six of the crew. The balance is well provided for, and are living on the ship as well as on the island, which is full of goats. The Veronica, which is now in Suva, or the Pioneer may go away to the rescue of the crew.

All the best,
Marc

Chair Historic Places Wellington

The Historic Places Wellington is an independent advocacy group of volunteers that split off from Historic Places Trust in 2012 when they transitioned into Heritage New Zealand:  Pouhere Taonga.

Our innercity architecture contributes greatly to Wellington’s unique character but how is this heritage protected? There are two avenues. Buildings and spaces may be listed under Pouhere Taonga but this doesn’t provide legal protection. To be protected by law they must be listed under the District Plan.  There are currently at least 550 earthquake prone buildings in the city with 150 of those heritage listed – not all are protected under the District Plan so their future is not assured.

Felicity provided us with examples of buildings and places that have either benefitted from being protected under the Plan or they have been lost by not being protected. We heard about a number of architectural gems including Truby King’s house and garden (and factory and Karitane hospital) in Melrose, the Gordon Wilson flats on the Terrace, St Gerard’s Church and Monastery on Mt Victoria; the Freyberg Pool and Wellington Railway Station.

Sir Truby King’s property is a good example of the impact of different heritage designations. Wellington City Council purchased his house and garden and designated it an historic reserve, listed under the District Plan and they remain protected. The factory became apartments but because the factory and hospital were not listed under the District Plan, the hospital was demolished last year.

Felicity’s very strong message was that our current Council is not willing to protect many of the buildings and spaces that contribute so much to the character of our city. So, a call to action for members who believe our architectural heritage is important. The Draft District Plan will be released next month, and this is the opportunity to voice your concerns and ensure your elected representatives are informed when they are making critical decisions on the future of our city.

     Update 3

     World Polio Day 24 October
World Polio Day is on the 24th of October and the Rotary community is getting ready to amplify its message about eradicating polio to protect the world’s children from this devastating disease.

Rotary has made tremendous progress. However we still need to intensify our fight to make polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated. Last year, the World Health Organization’s African region was certified free of wild poliovirus, showing that eradication is possible even in very difficult circumstances. The wild poliovirus remains endemic in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the good news is that Rotary is working with the Taliban to continue its inoculation programme.

Rotary has been working for 35 years to eradicate polio. The first children to be vaccinated were in the Philippines and since that time Rotary has reduced cases by 99.9%.

Rotary has donated $2.1 billion dollars in the 35 years and provided countless volunteer hours to protect 3 billion children in 122 countries. It costs $3 on average to protect a child against polio and we are committed to raise $50 million a year. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have joined with Rotary to eliminate polio and provide a 2 for 1 matching grant. Making our efforts even more significant.

Our club is committed to raising funds through selling “bacon butties” at the train station on Thursday 11th November and promoting the “Ride the Train event” on Sunday 14th. This is of course Covid permitting.

More information about both those events will be forthcoming and we thank you in advance for your support
