Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 5 July 2018
  President's Message

Great news! We were successful in our Rotary District Grant application to support Kahurangi School with their after-school sports programme. The programme costs $7,000/year to run and the school was $3,000 short. Through District Grant matched funding for club projects, we have received $1,500 to match our club contribution allocated from funds raised through the charity auction. The funds are expected to be available early August once ratified by Rotary International. Thank you to Joy and Marc for your superb work submitting the project proposal.

The 2018-19 Board met for the first time on Tuesday evening and finalised the club’s annual goals to support our Vision to inspire others to provide leadership in our community and the achievement of our three strategic priorities:

  • Connected with our Community
  • Engagement with Youth
  • Membership and Engagement
You can see a copy of this year’s club goals on our website by clicking here.

The Board looks forward to seeing you at our club planning meeting on Monday where we will be discussing how we can turn these goals into actions. The format of the meeting will include approx. 20 minutes of break-out discussion time in groups (be prepared to take your cuppa to the project table that most interests you) , followed by report back to the wider group.

Let’s make it a really successful and inspirational year for Port Nich. and the people that we will inspire and serve in our community.

Please be there to help inspire each other!

Speaker's Report

The guest speaker this week Monday 16 July was Mark McGuinness who lectures at the School of Mathematics and Statistics Victoria University of Wellington.  I was really keen to hear what Mark had to say and was expected monster calculation but he made it very easy for us all to understand how maths is applied in real world situations.

Mark’s interest was sparked as a youngster at birthday parties in particular when birthday games involved problem solving he was more interested in the problem solving exercises offered than the birthday party itself!  He has come from being a shy problem solver having to learn public speaking at the Gisborne Rotary Club to an accomplished lecturer.

Mark has a degree in Physics from the University of Canterbury and has worked around the world including at the University of Limerick.  He came back to NZ via a role in the Applied Maths Division in the DSIR.  Mark was pleased to be back in NZ and now travels from time to time in one week study groups bringing great minds together to problem solve.  He referred to Problems Solved “with a little help from my friends”.  This now operates under the MINZ Maths in Industry NZ.  Examples of this work have been used to solve the following problems:
  • Probability of a flood in a Queensland Dam
  • How long does Wairaki have to go
  • Heat pipes underground
  • Freezing Antarctic sea ice
  • Cooking crispy cereal
  • Weighting fast heavy fruit
  • Sorting in alumina silos
  • Blind source signal separation
  • Exploding volcanic rocks
Some of this sounds pretty cool and the equation looked amazingly confusing but in a nutshell he took a nonlinear diffusion equation and converted it to a linear poisson equation?  Whatever that means?  But what I did gleam from this – the equation has been used to problem solve across sectors i.e. from making crispy cereal to wool scouring!

Hearing about Mark’s time in the Antarctic provided a very poignant appreciation of the ice shelf.  It is massive in area but if it is not thicker than one metre it does not reflect the suns heat.  They discovered that ice platelets do not form in ice less than a metre thick obviously contributing to the great melting problem the world needs a solution to.  Bring in Mark and his friends who in solving this problem are trying to find a way to grow sea ice faster than it would form naturally.  This apparently requires turbulence from tidal waves to form ice crystals – who knew Maths could be so fascinating.  Mark put up some quotes about Maths and Music and the love of Maths.  For me it served to remind us all that while we might be able to solve problems with experience, instinct and a calculator - a solution for many problems can be found in an equation.  Fascinating talk Mark thank you.

July Perambulators

A little late perambulation for July.  Sunday 22 July at the slightly later time of 10am we are walking the Te Whiti Riser. This is a gentle path that meanders up the eastern hills of the Hutt Valley. Depending on time there are a number of alternative routes down the hill.

The walk will be approximately 2 hours long and will finish with coffee at a yet to be agreed local cafe. Light footwear would be fine.

Meet at the car park at the entrance of Te Whiti Park, Whites Line East for a 10 am sharp start. See attached map.

Reply to Peter at syrahnz@gmail.com to advise if you are attending. Please include your mobile number in case details alter on the day.

Glenn Conray Performs

Our Rotary club partners with the Wellington City Council in bringing performers to the Wellington Underground Market, under Frank Kitts Park. This Saturday (11am-1pm), Glenn Conroy will perform, assisted by our Port Nich. Membership director, Victoria Triegaardt. Call on by for a listen and don’t forget to tell your friends about what we’re doing down by the waterside!  Thank you to Dawn and Rick for making this happen.

GLENN CONROY
Glenn is a Wellington based graphic designer and semi-professional musician. It's not often that you see him in a solo performance role as he usually forms part of the line up in two well known local acts. Glenn is the lead singer, and bass guitar player for popular covers band "Nightmoves". When the opportunity presents, Glenn teams up with Gary McFadyen (ex Trixx, and guitarist in Nightmoves) to perform as the celtic duo "OFlynt".
At the Underground Markets Glenn will be performing an eclectic mix of popular songs old and new across many genres.
