Our Christmas dinner at Bellamys by Logan Brown on 9 December was attended by around 60 members and their partners. Where else in the world can members of the public enjoy fine dining in a building that houses the seat of Government and legislature. We are very lucky in New Zealand with the freedom we have. Thank you to all who joined in our final social of the year and helped make it a fun night. Special thanks to Peter for organising the event.
Thursday 10 December was also a special day for us. Bev, David S, Darryl and I had the privilege of delivering to House of Grace a certificate of appreciation and promise to pay $9,200 when they confirm the appointment of a builder to undertake the renovation work to the house to make it more liveable for the young mothers they look after. This is expected to take place in Q1 2021. We also took the opportunity to deliver Christmas gifts kindly donated by our members. Fiona Collins (Regional Manager) and Jaci Ford (Facilities Manager) were absolutely delighted with the generosity of members and the donation from Rotary Port Nic. Another typically fantastic effort.
The breakfast meeting on Wednesday will be the last for the year. Fittingly, Peter has arranged for a sprinkle of Christmas spirit for the morning. It will also be an occasion to induct a new member. I hope as many of you will attend to celebrate and close off to the year.
2020 has been a rather extraordinary year and for most it will be remembered as an 'annus horribilis' for a number of reasons. There will be very few who could honesty say their lives were unaffected by the fallout of the pandemic. I am sure we can learn from what we have been through to inspire us for a better 2021.
When I took office as president in July it seemed daunting and a challenge. Six months have gone by like a blink of an eye and I reflect on what we at Port Nic have achieved and the services we have provided during that time. I take this opportunity to thank all members for their support and the network of past presidents for their wise counsel and assistance which helped me enormously. It is the collective effort of all that makes Rotary Port Nic a special fellowship and service organization.
I wish you all and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Safe, Healthy and Joyous New Year. Have an enjoyable and well deserved relaxing summer break and see you all again in 2021.
Our first meeting will be an informal one – 7am for breakfast at Leuven on 20th January.
