Dr Tara McAllister (Te Aitanga a Māhaki) is a scientist, interdisciplinary scholar and a mother, with expertise spanning freshwater ecology to racism in the tertiary sector. She is a Research Fellow, at the Centre for Science in Society
Her research has sought to address the underrepresentation of Indigenous scholars in academia. She earned a Bachelor of Science in ecology and biodiversity and marine biology from the Victoria University of Wellington and a PhD in water resource management from the University of Canterbury.
Tara will be speaking to us on "Formidable Phormidium: toxic algae in New Zealand rivers."

ShelterBox has arrived in Turkey
The death toll in Syria and Turkey has now surpassed 25,000 people and may well double. It is mid-winter and many survivors do not have enough food, water, heating or basic amenities to keep themselves alive.
Shelterbox have arrived in Istanbul and are coordinating with DGs of the three affected districts and other aid organsiations.

Goal Setter Awards 2023 Presentation Breakfast

37 students applied for 2023 Goal Setter awards and the panel has selected 10 to be interviewed early March. From this, 4 outstanding students who have shown they can set and achieve goals, have faced significant challenges in their lives and have given service to their community will be awarded $4,000 each. At the time of applying they will be in at least their second year of study in a Wellington Tertiary institution.
The presentation breakfast will be held on Wednesday 19th April at the Pipitea Marae and Function Centre on Thordon Quay. Peter Boshier will be the guest speaker and each of the recipients will speak briefly on their story.
Tickets are available from Richard for $70 each (or $700 for a table of 10).

From the President..
It is heart-warming to see the response to the fundraising for the Cyclone appeal. Thank you to all who have given, either through Buying the Box or by direct donations. With matching from Club funds (up to $1000), these amounts have become all the more helpful. All of us will know or be related to someone affected. Hearing of Peter Whittington’s own situation is sobering, and we are pleased to see him back, (after a dose of Covid as well), to empathise with damage his vineyard has suffered and express gratitude for the precious bottles for raffle prizes.
Thank you to Michaela for coordinating the evening at Circa on Friday 17 March 2023 at 8.00 pm to see In Bed with Schoenberg as a fundraiser at Circa Theatre, proceeds to the Cyclone Relief Fund. It’s excellent and will make for an enjoyable social occasion as well.
Regarding that, Naoto Segawa has written to thank us for having him at the Club. He is giving a recital at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul in the Lady Chapel on 17 March at 12.45 in the TGIF series, with just a koha entry fee. He expressed again his gratitude for our support towards his training.
The happenchance arrival on Linda Wellington’s doorstep of Christian Biernath-Wüpping and his partner, Anita, after their van broke down led not only to them joining us for our Breakfast Meeting last week, but also a chance to hear about the Club to which he belongs, which meets only on-line. Though their home is in Hamburg, they are able to continue participating in their meetings, their global projects and high quality speakers from all over the world, while they are on their 8 month international travels on sabbatical. Their average age is 32 years.
This segues into our quest for more members and the different modus operandi which are emerging. More on these at this week’s meeting. Meanwhile, there are plenty of opportunities for our members to enjoy our activities. Thanks to Philippa for organising the Book Club, Steve the involvement in the Jumbo Tennis, Perambulators, David our participation in the Quiz Evening towards mental health funds on Sunday night and Louise the next Flashback Friday – see the Bulletin for all the details.

It’s a great opportunity for individual members to bring a friend or two with them, who may become interested in being members themselves.
Having actually seen algal bloom in the Marlborough Sounds for the first time in January, this week’s talk about toxic algae in NZ rivers will be of great interest, and even more so, considering the overflowing of the rivers across the landscape of extensive areas up north.

Method Recycling is a local and international environmental and commercial success story.
It began in 2011 with a staff of two – husband and wife team India and Steven Korner gave up their jobs; he was an engineer with Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, she was in commercial property, and started a new business.
From a team of two their business now has a staff of 27 with offices in Australia and the UK.
Their business is supplying colour coded bins to businesses to help the staff recycle waste.
“It’s more than a product,” India told the club this week. “It’s a visual statement about the company (using the bins) showing their commitment to the environment. In keeping with that commitment Method Recycle recycle their own plastics – their 60L bin is made from 60 percent recycled plastics and the 20L bin is 100 percent recycled.
With a $50 000 grant from Westpac they expanded into Australia.
“Our aim is to be in the top five precent of B Corp companies. B Corp is an award system signifying “Best for the World”.”
“Our guiding principle is that businesses should be responsible for what they put into the world,” India said, and so Method Recycling helps companies improve how they recycle.
A recent innovation is a move into data collection and analysis (which they call Method Insight). Sensors on the bins give real time data on usage and this gives insights into how to improve collection and recycling practices.
David and Richard started off by giving a quick recap on Lifting the Lid. Next we had Hamish and Ella speak about their experiences with Rotaract and Interact respectively. Lastly Port Nicholson returning member Jo stepped in and gave a fantastic abridged new member talk.
