“Together we make a Difference”
Kia Ora

It was an awesome breakfast meeting on 4 November, with a good turnout to witness the handing of $10,000 to Dr Andrew Marshall of the Children’s Hospital and Dr Nathaniel Dasyam of Malaghan Institute. I was particularly touched by Dr Nathaniel thanking and acknowledging the Ian Paterson Rotary Port Nicholson award he received. Listening to his presentation and the work he is doing at Malaghan fittingly described him as a worthy recipient of the award and refreshed us of the memory of Ian and his and Port Nic’s contribution to the community. It was a proud day for all of us. We will hear more from Dr Andrew Marshall in the new year.

Some of you, especially our newer members, may not be aware of the various Rotary online sites that are available to us and which are a source of a plethora of information. I identify a few:

Rotary Club of Port Nicholson- www.rotaryportnicholson.club

This is our website and contains information about Port Nic and the work we do.

My Rotaryhttps://my.rotary.org/en.

A place for members to access tools and information to make membership experience better. If you have not already registered yourself please do so and explore the world of Rotary.

District 9940 - www.rotary9940.org

This is the Rotary District for the Lower North Island. It comprises 1,500 members; over 50 Clubs and endless opportunities to get involved in the community, network, develop and make friends

Rotary Downunder - www.rotarydownunder.com.au

The official magazine for Rotarians in New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. It is published monthly and includes articles about both the global work of Rotary and Rotary in the South Pacific.

Our Christmas Dinner will be on Wednesday 9 December (no breakfast meeting that week) at Bellamys by Logan Brown (at the Beehive Building). Cost will be $45 for a two course meal and $60 for a three course. Details and registration will be emailed to members. In the meantime please pen in your calendar.

We are on the home stretch raising funds for the House of Grace. If you bought a ticket from Bev last Wednesday for the outdoor furniture please bring it on 11 Nov when the winner will be drawn by Mayor Andy Foster who is our guest speaker.

We also have the movie night (Blithe Spirit) at 7.30pm on 19 November at the Penthouse cinema. Details on booking tickets ($25pp -includes an ice cream) is covered elsewhere in the bulletin. Any movie staring Judi Dench has to be good. It will be a fun evening so please come along and bring your family and friends.

Our last meeting for 2020 will be on 16 December. We will reconvene in the new year for an informal breakfast at Leuven on 20 January and formally from 27 January.

Stay Safe

Speaker Report

Dr Andrew Marshall
Wellington Children's Hospital

Ten thousand dollars was given away at the last breakfast meeting. RCPN's Tony Robinson presented the proceeds from our raffle to Wellington Children's Hospital Clinical Director Andrew Marshall. These funds will be put forward for the new children's hospital.

Andrew said that a new hospital was urgently needed to provide proper infection control and facilities which were more comfortable and welcoming for children and their whanau. The hygiene requirements brought about by the Covid response exposed how urgent it was to have these new facilities.

Rotary is funding the Whanau room in this new hospital. This room will provide a safe haven from the stresses of a hospital environment for parents and families.

Dr Nathaniel Dasyam
Malaghan Institute
of Medical Research

We also welcomed Dr Nathaniel Dasyan from the Malaghan Institute, who is the first recipient of the Ian Paterson/Rotary Port Nicholson Scholarship award.

Nathaniel thanked the Paterson family for their generous support. He reflected on the values that Ian held and demonstrated in his life which inspired the work of the institute. These included generosity of spirit, community involvement, sharing with others and collaboration.

Nathaniel talked briefly about his work, which involved developing better cancer therapies leading to stronger immune responses to cancer.

The Malaghan Institute welcomes visitors and Nathaniel invited club members to do a tour of the Institute in the new year.
