President
Dr Marc Rands

COVID Lockdown continues....

Kia ora,

We are waiting to see if there will be any Level changes before Wednesday. If not, I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on Zoom!

Club profile: Hayley Burns

I live with my partner, Sam, and our son Rio in Newlands. I joined Rotary in 2016, inspired by the past actions of my Paternal Grandfather Fred Burns (DG: 1986) and Grandmother, Judith, who was an active Inner Wheel member. I am on the Youth and Public Image & Communication committees, and enjoy engaging with each.

I feel very lucky to be able to be a full time Mum. I have an academic and career background in Psychology, Counselling, Advocacy and Social Work; working in the Domestic Violence, Mental Health, and Disability sectors.  Before Rio (an honorary PNRC member) was born, my role as a Behaviour Specialist was to change the damaging,  dangerous and destructive behaviours of people with disabilities to more functional and socially acceptable ones.  I love gardening, cooking, music, and being with friends and family.

A “Flying patrol” to police county roads.
The stray cattle nuisance and other irregularities in connection with road traffic formed the subject of discussion at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Automobile Union at Wellington, when Mr J.V.Wilson (Wairarapa) moved: “That the police department be asked to establish a motorcycle section to patrol roads for the special purpose of dealing with (1) Breaches of the traffic by-laws; (2) breaches of the Lights on Vehicles Act; (3) stray cattle; and any other irregularities in connection with traffic.

All the best,
Marc

Guest Speaker:

Stephen Opie
CEO Aged Concern, Wellington

Our speaker this week, Stephen Opie is CEO of Age Concern Wellington, an organisation supporting seniors to thrive in our community. Age Concern Wellington (ACW) is a member of a national federation of 34 independent and autonomous regional Age Concern entities that provide community services locally. They are supported by Age Concern New Zealand, the national office that negotiates contracts with government, provide lobbying and advocacy support and engage with Ministers to represent the sector.

The organisation relies on its 340 volunteers to support their services, services that have a strong focus on facilitating connections and include:
  • Exercise classes – ‘Steady as you go’ a programme developed by Otago University intended to improve mobility and reduce the likelihood of falls;
  • Companion walking and visitor services – taking people for a walk or visiting seniors in their homes. Many contacts/referrals are through medical professionals;
  • Connect programmes at community hubs – bringing seniors together for social interaction;
  • Workshops on topics of interest such as brain health, nutrition and sleep;
  • Staying safe courses – driver refresher, life without a car or tea and tech sessions.

An informal survey of the local team identified the following as the 5 significant issues facing seniors: loneliness and isolation; digital exclusion; access to banking – the elimination of cheques has had a big impact, scams and housing and rates.

So how can you be involved? Volunteer - especially for walking and visitor services, attend courses, or donations are always welcomed.

Wellington City Mission

An update

The WCM is not accepting donated food under Level 4 as it is not safe for them to do so.

However, we have had a great response to the "Donate a meal to the City Mission" project. As of Saturday evening 41 members had agreed to donate the price of a Rotary meal to the City Mission raising $1,107 to assist the Mission in its very important work in these difficult times. That is worthy of celebration.

If you haven't agreed to donate yet, you still have until midnight tonight, Sunday, to register on the invitation sent to you. It is simple to do, just register and Treasurer Lindsay will charge your Club member's account.  All donations will receive a tax receipt.

If you have misplaced the invitation to donate, or didn't receive one, just send an email to Peter Whittington, syrahnz@gmail.com, advising you want to be part of the project.

Stay safe!
Peter Whittington

Welcome Mila Anne Parker

Congratulations to Nicola and Daniel
on the birth of their beautiful daughter

A note from Nicola......

I just wanted to send you a quick message to let you know that I finally had the baby! My little girl, Mila Anne Parker was born on 28 August at 10.04pm weighing a healthy 3.66kg.

Here’s a pic if you want to share with the other members. I’m back at home now and getting settled into the new world of parenthood.

We are so in love and I love being a mum!!

Can’t wait for you to meet her.

Update 2

The Rotary Learning Centre

As I mentioned previously, one of my District roles is being on the Learning and Development team. Over the past two weeks we have been running a series of Zoom training sessions on the Rotary Learning Centre.

The Learning Centre is a wonderful resource for all Rotary members, offering a whole range of courses on everything you need to know about Rotary. And it is all free. Several of our members have been participating in these sessions and Port Nicholson is generally well represented, so thank you.

Access to the Learning Centre is easy and is available to all Rotarians.  All you need to do is type My Rotary into your browser, enter your email address and a password and you are in.

Once you have accessed the site, go to the Learning and Reference title in main menu, click on it and access the Learning Center (note the American spelling). There is a myriad of courses available which will help you understand your role and that of your committee and much besides.

The courses can take 15 minutes or one hour depending on the subject and your availability. They cover everything from leading change, being a good facilitator, diversity, equity, and inclusion etc. Once, you completed the course you even get a certificate.

Enjoy the courses, and if you have any difficulties accessing the site, just let me know.

Unfortunately, as a result of Covid-19 Lockdown Level restrictions, we are unable to run our lunch on the

We will reschedule this event, if appropriate, at some stage in the future and this will naturally also depend on other Club commitments.

Thank you for your support.
