Trust you are all off to a good start to the long Labour weekend and enjoying time with your family and friends.

Labour day, fourth Monday of October, commemorates the struggle for an eight-hour working day when in 1840, carpenter Samuel Parnell fought for it and New Zealand workers were amongst the first in the world to claim that right. Labour day was first celebrated on 28 October 1890 and took the form of a day off for government workers, celebrated with parades followed by outings, picnics and sports events. By the 1920’s Labour day began to decline as a public spectacle and ended up, as it is today, just another holiday! What has all this got to do with Rotary? Nothing really – just a bit of  historical titbit for you!

One of the things I really like about Rotary Port Nicholson is the spirit and willingness of its members to spare time and effort for a worthy cause. Friday 23 October was no exception. An enormous thank you to those who volunteered their time to collect for World Polio Day at the railway station, especially those who turned up at the crack of dawn to help set up the marquee and the BBQ’s for the bacon butties and those who took time off work to partake in the event. We had supporters from other Wellington Rotary clubs and a large contingent of Rotarians from Kapiti who did the train ride and joined us for an hour before catching the train back. It was a fun filled and enjoyable morning, in spite of the occasional wind gusts. Whilst the crowds were not like what we had last year, nonetheless a very productive day. Special thanks to David and Linda for masterminding and organising the event on behalf of the District. They are a source of inspiration.

The raffle draw took place on Wednesday – congratulations to the winners. The good news of course is that The Children’s Hospital and Malaghan Institute will each receive $10,000. A huge thank you to Tony and his awesome team for all the hard work they put into making this a success.

District 9940 Governor Gillian Jones is our guest speaker on Wednesday 28 October. She will talk to us about what’s going on in the world of District 9940 (which we are affiliated to), the mission and goals she has set for the year and the part we can and should play to achieve them. It will be a very informative and engaging session so I urge all our members to come along for breakfast that day. The board members will be meeting with her following the meeting.
Our Monte Carlo fun night, at Wellington Bridge Club in Thorndon, is only a week away! Its success depends on your participation so please register and come along to a fun night. You will not miss out on the Bledisloe cup game that night – Darryl has organised the big screen to watch it live from 9.30pm so that you have a really enjoyable evening!

Just a heads up to mark, tentatively, the evening of Wednesday 9 December in your diary for our Christmas dinner. Peter, our director of club services, is working on options and will advise when arrangements are confirmed.

Speaker Report

Maurice Roberts
Wellington City Mission

Along with being the fundraising executive for the Wellington City Mission (WCM), Maurice is a keen golfer and grandfather to 9 children.

The Covid lockdown has had a significant effect on the Wellington City Mission. To keep their motivation with their Zoom meetings during this period they were able to include All Blacks, the Prime Minister and other celebs – it all helped to keep their spirits up.

COVID certainly had them rethinking everything they did – many things stopped and there were a lot younger people requiring need as the lower end retail and hospitality jobs were retrenched. Volunteers couldn’t help out, all of the donated food stopped coming in as restaurants and cafes weren’t open, many of the channels they had previously used weren’t available and yet with their determination and quick thinking, they managed to deliver a full years’ worth of food and meals by car over 2 months.

Wellingtonians pitched in with thousands of dollars in donations. A house in Petone was made available to WCM and the Wellington City Night Shelter was dissolved and handed over to WCM. A building on Manners Street was also made available with 38 rooms for emergency shelter.

Since lockdown, WCM has been involved in Sports Banks – providing free sports gear for kids who want to play sports but can’t afford the kit.

The Drop-in-Centre that they ran has changed from supplying a set lunch each day to providing food which is available for people all day, served to the table and users can stay as long as they need.

They ran a last chance school for kids who needed some help and direction but have decided this is better run by Praxis who are already doing it.

A major focus is now on Whakamaru – a new build 5 storey building – which will provide 35 semi-permanent (up to 1 year) housing units. The WCM office will also be in there which will allow them to have a better interaction with their clients. It will have facilities and spaces for the community to use also.
During hard times it’s always the less well-resourced that struggle – the Wellington City Mission always appreciated the support it gets from Wellington residents and supporters.

As Wellingtonians we also appreciate the support that WCM provide to our less fortunate residents – well done WCM….keep up the good work.

The "2020 Celebrate Brighter Days" Raffle
A raffle run by the Port Nicholson Rotary Club and supported by many Rotarians in the District has raised over $20 000 for the new Wellington Children’s Hospital and the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research.

The raffle of one thousand tickets at $20 each was drawn under police supervision on Wednesday morning, and organiser Tony Robinson of RC Port Nicholson said the support had been fantastic.
“Covid 19 forced us to cancel our annual charity auction and dinner but we felt we had to do something for these charities and the raffle was that something.”

Mal Joyce, the General Manager of the Wellington Children’s Hospital said the new hospital would be the best thing ever to happen to the children of the region.
“Staff have never worked in an environment as good as the new place will be, and we will get better outcomes for kinds,” she said.

Megan Riley, the Fundraising Events and Engagement Manager for the Malaghan Institute referred to the long standing support relationship between the club and the institute and thanked all those who had helped.
In total, including donations, $20 389 was raised with all twelve prizes being donated, some by regular supporters of the auction like Sue Shore and Alison Blain who both donated jewellery for the raffle.
