Congratulations to all – the total funds raised haven’t been finalised yet but it looks like we will get to $45,000.
A huge and very special thank you to the members of the Projects Committee for achieving a very successful evening, from all accounts everyone enjoyed themselves – the atmosphere was engaging. The evening would not have been a success if it hadn’t been for our Rotary Club members and their friends and families who were able to attend – thank you.
The Wellington Club was a perfect venue, and the staff must be congratulated for their unobtrusive service throughout the evening. Everything was performed with efficiency and effectiveness. Very many thanks to Jane and her team.
MC Tony Herring was in sparkling form with his quick wit and easy manner directing proceedings most efficiently throughout. We were fortunate to again have the services of a professional auctioneer and Frank used all his wiles and experience to achieve prices befitting the attractive items on offer.
Last but by no means least, our own MC Tony Herring. He had important job to perform and at times this wasn’t easy, due to everyone enjoying themselves!

Speaker - Johnathan Young
Head of Policy Research and Insights at Ara Ake
Johnathan is currently Head of Industry and Government Engagement, Ara Ake (Future energy development).
Previously Jonathan served as the MP for the New Plymouth electorate. Through his role as Energy & Resources spokesman, he travelled throughout New Zealand gaining a thorough knowledge of the integrated energy system. He has travelled overseas gaining insight into other countries energy systems, gaining a broad understanding of the global energy transition.
Johnathan will be talking to us about "Hydrogen power - Its future in New Zealand."
This week my reflections entirely focus on the wonderful occasion enjoyed by 130 people at the Wellington Club last night. Our signature annual fundraising event came together after months of work from Paula and her proactive committee and as a Rotary Club we should be very proud of what was achieved.
As always, the friendship and camaraderie on the committee have been particular highlights throughout.
Tūī-Eilish, a very talented 17 year old from Kapiti College, sang two beautiful ballads to get the evening off to a memorable start and the quizzes were as popular as ever.
Special thanks to the invaluable Rotaract support so capably covering the extensive administrative demands of a very busy evening.
I will miss next Wednesday’s meeting as I am answering the call to look after grandchildren in Melbourne over the next week. David Shackleton has very kindly agreed to take to the podium and direct proceedings.
So a very happy and proud President signing off. See you all soon.

Yon Yi's art workshop
Yon Yi has a painting workshop that will touch on the basics of patterns and colours used in both Korean and Maori traditional art and design, and the myths and symbolism associated with them. All materials will be provided. Participants will be able to take their finished works home.
Heritage festival fever is about to grip the capital and the wider Wellington Region. From 23
October to 5 November, there will be 105 events in Wellington and the wider region. They will showcase the history and
heritage, and cultural vibrancy of the region’s people.

“Driven to Shakespeare"
The mix of a focus and youth and volunteering saw Marc Rands, Tony Robinson and Jeff Lee kindly helping with the ‘fetching and carrying’ of students to or from SGCNZ’s National Shakespeare Schools Production, and Nicole Barker mentoring and driving our Student Costumier to assist with the costuming of the 48 rangatahi.
The results were outstanding, with the performances being a huge credit to all concerned.
The unfortunate ‘blip’ at the end of a measles case has meant supplying myriad lists to the National Public Health Unit, to avoid it being a ‘super-spreader’. Luckily, adults born prior to 1969 are considered immune.

Rush Family Car and Motor Bike Collection Feilding
“The Rush family collection has to be seen to be believed”
A couple of months ago I visited this collection of vehicles and memorabilia and was amazed at the items on exhibition. There are some very important cars from N Z motorsport history as well as many others of great interest, and an incredible collection of books, photographs and other memorabilia. Terry Rush was one of the people instrumental in getting the Manfeild Racetrack built back in the 1970s.
Applicants are sort from suitable young people (18-24 years) for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award in the latter half of January 2024.
RYLA is a five-day intensive, high energy, challenging, residential programme to develop young
leaders from District 9940. The RYLA programme recognises, encourages and educates current and future leaders by offering them an intensive leadership experience with the cooperation of
community and culture organisations, businesses, local and national leaders.
RYLA is an invaluable programme that brings together individuals to harness creativity, diversity,
inspiration, energy and leadership to cultivate personal growth and develop meaningful personal
change and harnessing their leadership potential.

Matt Farrar and a group of like-minded businesspeople, calling themselves Trails Wellington, who love mountain bike riding, (including members of the Drury family) approached the council about generating an asset for the city making use of the town belt - the idea is to create a commuter biking network off road.
