December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

Rotary and Rotarians are committed to helping people to live healthy lives. Our signature project in this area is Polio Eradication. But polio is not the only disease or aspect of healthy living on which Rotarians have expended energies. Disease Prevention and Treatment is one of Rotary’s Seven Area of Focus.

We raised $426 today and $850 over the last two Sundays. it is enjoyable work and we get to be out in the community. A huge thank you to Brent, Tony, David S (both days),David B (both days), Sheryn, Hayley, Jo, Mike, Marc, Heather, Everard and André.

Lafulafu is passionate about the health and well-being of our elderly and has mobilised and created a safe space for Pacific people in Wellington to come together to exercise, share their stories and raise any concerns and support they may need. She has organised many community events in partnership with government and community organisations.

Another example of quiet a contribution. André has noticed that our laptop does not have speakers, so he has bought two for us to use (Black Friday sales!!). Thank you so much.

Christmas giving
Our Christmas giving this year is to the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust. Gifts of personal items and toiletries will be most welcome. Please bring your contribution along on either 4 th or 11 th December, and Darryl and I will deliver them.

December challenge- to connect
And finally from me, a challenge. At the two December meetings, sit alongside someone you don’t usually sit with, get to know them a bit better, how are they, what’s up for them right now and so on. As was highlighted in the survey, one of the things we value most about our club is friendship and fellowship, not just participating in projects.

Goal Setters - Ki te Ao Marama update

The Goal Setters awards breakfast will be on March 5th 2025 at Te Papa. We are awaiting confirmation of the speaker.

This year 46 applicants applied (10 more than last year), and 11 applicants have been selected for interviews. There are now 6 sponsors, increasing the scholarship funds from $16 K to $21K, of which we are extremely grateful for.

Renaming buy the box- what do you suggest?
Following on from forum discussions, David B invited us all to come up with a new name for the Buy-the-Box session. Ideas to be sent to his mobile please 027 354 4137, and there is a prize of coffee for the winning name. Looking forward to hearing all your ideas.

Inspiring speaker making a difference every day to Wellington's Youth

We have had many extraordinary speakers share their stories with our Club, and this week’s speaker was no exception. Clint Schoultz is the Chair of the Wellington based Take 10 Vulnerable Support Charitable Trust. The Trust and its volunteers are instrumental in the success of four programmes:

Take 10 – providing a late-night safe zone on Courtney Place;
Do Some Good - providing lunches for over 4000 children each day;
Take 10 Arvo’s - providing a space and after school activities for children who need it and Generation Link, connecting children with seniors to do activities together to create a win-win.

Clint’s day job is Venues Catering Manager at Sky Stadium and it was when he was dining out in the city he recognised that young people become very vulnerable if they find
themselves in the city at night without support. So, in 2016 he and a group of friends began conversations around creating a safe space where people could charge their phone, be
given water (so they could make good decisions) and be supported to get home safely.
