Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 10 May 2018

President's Message

Goodbye for a while

Congratulations and thanks to all those involved in the charity auction. A fantastic result which brings much credit to the club and to those involved. Meanwhile…..

I’m leaving on a jet plane,
Don’t know when I will be back again
Oh babe I hate to go.

A John Denver song, the best version of which is by Peter, Paul and Mary, and a US #1 in 1969 (apparently much loved by those being sent to Vietnam, as the war was at its height at that time).

I am off to the USA, and I do know when I will be back again (Monday 4 June) and really, I am looking forward to going.

I will be passing through LA international Airport where, as Susan Raye sang, “the big jet engines roar”. That was a #1 hit in New Zealand for her in 1971, but it did less well for her in the USA (and elsewhere).

I was a bit surprised about how few big hit songs there are about flying. These two are by far the best known). Steve Miller’s “Fly Like an Eagle” could be included, but there aren’t many others.

Leaving all that aside I will send home a report on having lunch at the Rotary Club of Chicago – Rotary One as it likes to be called, this being the first Rotary club in the world. (Howard has been there). And I hope to go to other clubs in Denver and Honolulu.

The club will be in the safe hands of Howard, Bev and Lisa who will each run a meeting while I am gone, and I will pick up the reins again on 11 June.

Take care and be safe.

John Bishop - President

Port Nicholson Charity Auction
 4 May 2018

A record number of guests and Rotarians attended our annual Charity Auction on Friday. More than 200 people attended, many friends of the club, spouses and partners of club members were there along with two tables each of guests from the Malaghan Institute and Wellington Free Ambulance.

The InterContinental Hotel and Executive Chef Ed Weicherding managed to produce another fantastic meal with the highlight being a perfectly cooked steak. Big thanks also go to Peter Whittington who again generously provided an almost endless selection of excellent Brookfield wines.
Jay Harvie of Newstalk ZB led the proceedings with his usual mix of humour and good spirits and was followed by presentations and updates from Professor Graham Le Gros of Malaghan and the Chair of Wellington Free Ambulance, Ross Martin.
John Bishop challenged us all with the quizzes and despite some alleged uses of “Mr Google” most tables were tested. The winners received either a bottle of wine donated by Spy Valley or a wonderful pair of gum boots provided by our very own Jeff Lee.

We then went on to the main part of the evening, the auction. Again, led by the inimitable Ian Paterson and Charles Morley-Hall the auction turned into a huge event raising close to $75,000.
Ian has stated earlier that this was positively his last auction. To recognise this and the incredible contribution Ian has made, not only to our Rotary Club but also charities throughout Wellington, John Bishop provided a very eloquent, fitting and moving tribute to Ian for all his work over the years.

The entire event was a huge success and particularly thanks go to the all the Rotarians who generously gave donations, support and help. A special mention should go to the Auction Committee without whom the event would not have happened. So big thanks to Rick Hughes, Ian Paterson, Ros Fogel, Paula McKnight, Bill Day, Tony Robinson, Charlie Holland from Malaghan and Rachel Carr from WFA.

Note from Howard

What a wonderful Charity Auction.

District Governor Nominee John Mohi in the audience and he took the time to send a note to President John stating: "Port Nicholson RC is a model for us all to aspire to with all your service projects and your generously supportive members." Thanks to David and his team.

A special mention was made of the significant contribution Ian Paterson has made over the years to this event.
John’s comments are worthy of quoting:  “As far as this club is concerned Ian is Mr Auction. Without him, without his services, without his drive, without his enthusiasm, and indeed without his….to use an overused word….his passion, much of what we have done in this club over the last 25 years would not have been achieved….and I don’t just mean in charity fundraising at events like this.
“He has brought honour and respect to himself and to the club, and at a very practical level, he has brought funds into the coffers of good causes….and it has happened again tonight…as it has happened so often before.
“He is a good man doing great work for others. “

RotaFEST 18 - A Festival of Rotary

11 - 13 May 2018, Palmerston North Convention Centre
We have listened to your feedback and this year’s annual District Rotary Event will NOT be a conference! This year RotaFEST 18 will incorporate in the programme many activities and opportunities for you to be entertained, to witness the Rotary opening of a world first in native animal care at WildBase Recovery, to enjoy world class speakers, and to share our Rotary experience and activities with each other and the community.

Please let Bev Wells know if you are going to attend and we can look at combined accommodation … maybe an Airbnb house to keep costs down, but we’ll have to be quick, so email: bev.wells@xtra.co.nz. There’s also the option of travelling up for just the Training Assembly on the Sunday which I would recommend for all members to refresh our thoughts and particularly helpful for newer members.  Any questions, get in touch.

District 9940 Annual General Meeting

Our District AGM is going to be held at 8.30am 13 May 2018 at the Convention Centre in Palmerston North.

Rotarians are reminded that on on 10 April 2018 an email was sent advising the recommended changes to the Constitution and a background paper

Tree Planting

As part of the District's goal of planting a tree for every club member, the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve on  Sunday June 10th 1:30 p.m.

The plan is to have an afternoon starting with a picnic lunch (BYO) and then to do some tree planting.  Afterwards we could do a short walk to admire ours and previous planting in the area, and Interact and Rotaract members are welcome to take part.

If you would like to take part, please contact Lisa King (lisakingaling@gmail.com), who is on the committee of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating the Club’s participation.
