Takina Open Day- Our members in action

On Saturday, 15 July a group of our Rotarians, two from Mount Victoria Rotary, and two Rotaract members volunteered to collect donations for the Mayoral Relief Fund - this time for the Loafers Lodge Tenants. Although it was cash only, people were still generous if they carried cash. At this stage, we don’t know how much money was raised as we have to send the buckets back to the City Council.

A very big thank you to everyone who was involved, it certainly was an experience and a day for letting people see Rotary at work. At the end of the day the group remaining enjoyed a welcome drink together.

Chief Scientist, Volpara Health. Wellingtonian of the Year 2023

Ralph is a founding Director of VHT and has been at the forefront of the digital breast imaging field for over 25 years. Initially a research scientist at the University of Oxford, Ralph’s innovative work in quantitative breast imaging technology led him to form first OXIVA Limited and then Mirada Solutions with Professor Sir John Michael Brady. Under Ralph’s leadership Mirada became the number-one provider of image registration and fusion tools.

Thoughts from President Tony

Hi everyone
I hope you are enjoying a wonderful Matariki break today

and great to see the sunshine again.

I thought I would include the Leadership acronym (below) I shared last Wednesday especially for those people not able to make the meeting. It had even more significance for me as I found it on the bedroom wall of a 16 year old whose home we were visiting. If this young man exhibits half of these character traits he will grow into a fine human being and a future leader.

I had a huge highlight yesterday as I attended a concert in the Hub at Victoria University put on by the wonderful students and alumni of the Music school which like other Arts subjects is now faced with major cuts. As the massed choir and orchestra were performing Verdi and lifting the roof, I felt both profoundly moved and also angry that such brilliance and significance could be threatened in an way. It was good to see this featured on TV 1 news last night.

What a busy time our Club has ahead with this weekend being a perfect example! I look forward to joining a number of us at the Tākina Convention Centre tomorrow and special thanks to Raymond and Paula for all your organisation. And then we have a second Sunday at the Waitangi Market….always a favourite.

So back to the sunshine and enjoying the “Riviera of the Lower North Island.” I must not be quick to criticise Wellington’s weather!

I look forward to seeing you at our next Wednesday’s meeting.

Casino Fun Night

Our now famous Monte Carlo will be held on Saturday 19th August to raise funds for the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust.

We will purchase packs of essential items for the women as they transition from assisted accommodation with the WHWT to their own permanent accommodation. We
have been able to develop packs containing a Duvet cover and inner, bath sheet, pillows and bed sheets and an electric jug and toaster- all new for just under $100. The actual
retail value of about $480.

The WHWT caters for approximately fifty homeless women each year and we hope to be able to provide at least a year’s supply of these packs.

This very affordable event - $35 - including supper and playing chips - will provide these essential packs which will have a major impact and add dignity for the women as they move
on in their lives.

Accept the challenge and be part of a world class event

Heather challenged members of the club to jump into action and be part of a world class event in Wellington as part of 'buy the box' this week.

With an estimated 2 billion people expected to watch the FIFA Women's World Cup, international interest is high. Tens of thousands of fans are expected onshore.

BUT NZ ticket sales are a concern. FIFA announced they were giving away 20,000 tickets free!! Even if you pay for one, they are selling for as little as $10 each. Why wouldn't you go??

There are nine games in Wellington. The first game is:

21 July, 7.30pm - Spain v Costa Rica

Spain is currently 3rd favourite to win the tournament (with the US and England ahead) so this is going to be a quality game and the atmosphere will be amazing! Click below to link to book tickets.

Book Group Wednesday 19th July

This month RCPN book club are going to a film at the Penthouse Cinema Brooklyn plus a midwinter meal.

We are meeting at 5.45 pm. We can dine early or after the film once we decide on the film session. Meet there for a drink and ice cream before 6.

Movie to be confirmed on Tuesday when the schedule comes out

perspective; policy issues that could benefit from greater focus and Wellington city – our challenges and opportunities.
