John Allen is a former chief executive of the New Zealand Racing Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, and the New Zealand Post Group.
He is also a former partner in the law firm Rudd Watts & Stone.

Thank you very much to everyone who came to the Club Forum this week and I was delighted at what we achieved. We had an excellent attendance and a very high percentage of those present offered their thoughts.
We had a range of very positive ideas which were noted in writing by our Secretary Jo, and while people expressed strong support for the way the Club continues to progress, we will always look closely at our performance and look to get stronger. See below for link to Secretary Jo's notes.
There is a plan of attack with your comprehensive feedback which I want to share with you. At Friday morning’s Board meeting we discussed this plan which begins with each Board member receiving Jo’s minutes today. When the Board meets for the last time this year on the 12th December, the Forum feedback will be the main item on the agenda, and that will give the Board another 3 weeks to further consider your views.
From there we will draw up a bullet point analysis of any future changes or progressions we would consider making in 2024. I will speak to this at the first formal meeting of the year on 31 January and they will then be highlighted as a feature item in the Bulletin.
Finally if there is anyone who would still like to communicate a view please do so; we would love to hear from you.
Next Wednesday the Chancellor of the University, John Allen is speaking and the Heads of our 3 chosen charities for 2023 will be receiving Certificates formally recording our notable donations. So it will be a notable and fun occasion and I am hoping to see a large number of you there.

A message from David Shackleton - our District Liaison
One of the questions that arises from time to time is:
“Why don’t we work better with the other Rotary Clubs in Wellington?” The good news is we do.
There are several projects where all the Clubs in Wellington have been or are involved. A great example is Lifting the Lid (LTL). This year six of the Wellington Clubs have generously donated funds to the LTL programme. This is one of the reasons we have been able to make an impact.
As we look to 2024, all seven of the clubs are now committed to the LTL programme. In addition the LTL team have made presentations to the clubs in Porirua and the Hutt. Another great example of working together is with the End Polio Now Bacon Butty event. Last year every club in Wellington sent a delegation to assist with the programme.
Going forward Dawn is spearheading, what will be a joint Wellington Rotary programme, to build a walk way from Birdwood Street to Zealandia. And if you are looking for a way to support another Club, the Rotary Club of Wellington North are looking for volunteers to help with the Khandallah Fair on Sunday 10th of December.
In addition, there have been joint programmes and representation from the clubs in cleaning the beaches, Jumbo Tennis, the Auction, the Karori Club’s business breakfasts and even our Predator Free programme at Te Papa.
While there will always be opportunities to promote Rotary through working together, we do have an excellent relationship with our colleagues.

I hope Port Nich friends are doing well? I still enjoy reading the Bulletins and can see you are all keeping active!
I have a request from a fellow Rotarian at our Whakatu club in Nelson and wondered if you would be happy to pass the following request onto members - click here .
Sue has started a new contract in Wellington and will be commuting from Nelson every second week. She has previously worked in Wellington so is familiar with the area. Sue is looking for accommodation in the central city. I thought there maybe a Rotarian interested in some extra income or share with someone who might be.
I am very happy to recommend Sue who is a terrific, positive person with a great sense of humour. As Sue is familiar with our breakfast club in Nelson, I would of course be encouraging her to visit Port Nich whenever she can fit it in! She will be working on The Terrace which would be ideal. It would be great if a solution is found through the Rotary network.

Club Forum goes well Thirty four members, two guests and two small persons – Rio and his new brother Marlow – attended this week’s club forum which discussed a range of issues facing the club.
Our newest club member has certainly had his share of challenges - we look forward to getting to know him better and enjoying his company as he continues his Rotary journey with us.

A Parting Thought
The Wisdom of Dogs, by David Shackleton
As the owner of two golden retrievers, I was thinking what are the behaviours that
humans could learn from dogs.
David arrived at five:
Dogs always wake up in a good mood. No matter what the weather or how well they slept, a dog will always wake with a wagging tail and be eager to greet you.
Dogs are always appreciative of every meal. You can serve them the same thing every day yet they will joyously wolf down the meal. No complaints that the foods cold, it doesn’t taste right or its not organic.
Dogs don’t hold grudges. There’s no grumpiness, sulking or arguing. You tell them off and two minutes later they have forgotten all about it.
Dogs are great listeners. They don’t interrupt, they don’t look at their phones or glance over your head…no they listen emphatically and attentively and may even put their head on your lap.
Dogs always treat strangers as though they are friends they are yet to make. There is seldom reticence or judging or evaluating …no, dogs tend to love everyone equally..
