Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 27 September 2018
  President's Message

The Board met last night and there are a few new dates to add to your diary:

Wednesday 24 October – World Polio Day and Port Nich. evening meal - there will be no meeting on Labour Day so we have hatched a plan to have our Friday Frolics on a Wednesday! Go figure! This will coincide with World Polio Day. John Bishop will update us with details in due course.

Monday 19 November – Annual General Meeting - the financial statutory accounts for the Club and Charitable Trust were approved for filing. Copies will be emailed to members shortly so that you can see these ahead of the Club’s AGM. Our guest speaker for that meeting will be Yusuke Ishihara.

Saturday 6 October - Blood pressure awareness campaign – we still have some volunteer slots to fill from 12-2pm. If you can assist for all or part of that time, please click on the event to register.

We're looking forward to Friday Frolics with 16 attending, including a surprise guest!

Speaker's Report

Imam Qamar was our speaker this week.
Imam is a Muslim pastor who has been posted to NZ to cover our country and Samoa.

The theme of the talk was “A humble endeavour to Educate and remove Misunderstandings”.

There has been a NZ Survey which revealed intolerance for the Muslims in NZ.  In response Imam is promoting events that reach out to the wider community to make friends with Muslims over a cup of tea.

Islamic religion promotes an attitude to God of Peace, Submission and Obedience.  There are five steps that Muslim’s adhere to:
  1. Shahadah – none worthy of worship except God (creator)
  2. Salat – after age 10 Muslims offer 5 daily prayers which are essential for spiritual well-being
  3. Saum – Fasting (abstain from food, water and conjugal activities) in order to focus on spirituality
  4. Zakat – Give wealth (sharing) or spending
  5. Hajj – Pilgrimage to Mecca

There are two branches of faith being the rights of Allah (God) and the rights of his creation which go hand in hand.  The expectation is that this means we live peacefully.

Articles of Faith (below) outlines how Muslims believe that all writing and prophets should be respected and that there should be no compulsion in religions that is there should be freedom of belief:
  1. Unity of God
  2. His Angels
  3. His Books
  4. His Prophets
  5. The last Day
  6. Devine Degree

Imam went on to outline how the Quran came about – Muhammad had the Holy Quran revealed to him by God over a 23 year period.  It was revealed in Arabic but has over time been translated into 75 languages.

Imam also outlined how the Holy War has been miscommunicated that the Jihad is an individual’s ability to strive and struggle.  However due to an inability to resist aggressors in war over time, the need to defend oneself or protect themselves made it acceptable to enter into war for defensive reasons.   This talk certainly provided background to Islam and highlighted the need for acceptance and tolerance of all people.

Thanks

It a big send off for Stuart Young who attended Monday's meeting with wife Jenny. Stuart has retired as an active member but the club did not want to end our relationship with him and have made him an honorary member.
