President Nicole

What a wonderful couple of weeks it has been with everything that Rotary has to offer. Last week we had an inspiring presentation from Professor Rob Badcock about a ground breaking company " Open Star' which is leading the world in Super Conductivity energy from a warehouse in Ngaraunga Gorge.

This was followed by Janet Glenn from Onslow College who shared the impact that Lifting the Lid is having at their school, enabling them to provide right support to the students when they need it.

The Grand Night Out was another professionally run event led by Paula McKnight and Rick Hughes, that enabled everyone to have a great time, as well as understand the need for the Lifting the Lift Programme. Thank you David for your impactful speech- it touched everyone in the room. Yet again I felt incredibly proud of what our club achieves.

Have a great week everyone. Nicole

Lower Hutt Rotary Club “Big Hats” event
As part of our programme to support other Rotary Clubs in the Wellington Region we joined the Lower Hutt Rotary Club “ Big Hats, High tea” fundraiser last Sunday.
10 members and friends attend this event which raised approximately $21,000 for the LifeFlight Trust, Lifting the Lid and other Rotary youth programmes.

Lifting the Lid

Last week we had several Lifting the Lid guests.  Janet Glenn, Deputy Principal from Onslow College, Ellie Haydon and Geraldine Needham-Girvan from Johnsonville Rotary and Richard Joyce representing the Patrick Pearce Feeney Estate. It was a pleasure to have them join us.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT….
Superconductivity Innovations- Professor Rod Badcock -OpenStar

The focus of Professor Rod Badcock’s presentation was on the advancements in superconductivity, highlighting New Zealand's role in high-temperature superconductors. He compared it to the coldness of a freezer and how it allows for zero DC resistance. There is also potential of using materials like hair as superconductors, due to their lack of resistance.

Nicholas Golledge – Professor of Glaciology, Victoria University

Nicholas Zoomed into the club meeting from the Wairarapa and gave a presentation on global sea level rise and socioeconomic impacts for New Zealand. Nicholas highlighted the drivers of sea level change from melting glaciers, thermal expansion of the water itself, and the fact that Wellington is actually sinking ½ cm per year!
