This week's Speaker:
Aleisha Amohia
Aleisha Amohia (Te Ātihaunui-a-Papārangi) (she/her) is a passionate young advocate for diversity and inclusion in all spaces, but especially the technology industry.
Aleisha is a Victoria University of Wellington graduate with a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Computer Science and specialising in Artificial Intelligence) and a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Management and minoring in Information Systems), and now works as software developer for global open source project Koha, at Catalyst IT.
She is coming to speak to our Club about Diversity and inclusion in all spaces, but especially technology.
A special presentation
Lindsay Chitty will bring along 5 Exhibition frames (80 pages) of material from his Prisoner of War collection of Postal History, as part of Anzac Day.
What he is bringing is Civilian Internee Mail relating to Civilians interred by the Japanese during their occupation of the Far East in WWII. These were people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and were interred because their home Countries were at war with Japan. Included in this is some very scarce material relating to New Zealand internees. The best award for this material is Large Gold at the Canberra Stamp Show in 2020. This exhibit is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Far East WWII.
This will be a silent display, but Lindsay will be around after the meeting to talk anyone through the exhibit who is interested. Pictured is one on the documents – surrender document at Singapore, signed by the three Chiefs of Staff. Mr Charlwood was the Governor of Singapore and interred by the Japanese, and this certificate is one of two remaining examples produced for attendees at the ceremony.

What moving addresses by the extremely deserving Goal Setter Award Recipients – Annalese Hume-Kinzett, Claire Rikihana, Michaela Wilson and Samih Zaia. The adversity each has overcome, and how much they have achieved in spite of it, is not only a credit to them, but an inspiration to others. Enormous appreciation to Nicole Barker and Mark Ratcliffe, Linda and Craig Wellington - Waterford Security, Mike and Sue Selvadurai, and Kirk Burnnand - Property Logic for donations to facilitate their awards. There is no doubt that $4000 given to each of them will make a huge difference, especially as in some cases, they are not allowed to work over and above their studies.
With health issues being a major focus of our Club currently, it is even more appropriate that our recipients (pictured top to bottom with President Dawn and Chief Ombudsman and key note speaker Peter Boshier), Annalese is studying for a Bachelor in Social Work, Claire to become a Māori Registered Nurse, Michaela for a Bachelor in Nursing and Samih for a medical degree.
Chief Ombudsman, Peter Boshier, was an inspired choice of Guest Speaker. Having just come from viewing the horrendous effects of Cyclone Gabrielle, Peter spoke to the adversities so many in those regions have to overcome.
Very many thanks to Jane and Richard and team for all your work to create a streamlined and memorable event. Hopefully Jane’s promotion of the Club throughout will encourage some to join!
A reminder that Eden will be seeking names from all at this next meeting to approach to become members.
There is another opportunity to join in with another Club – Hutt City Rotary is appealing for more Quiz teams. The cost of $30 per person is contributing to the Innovative Young Minds programme. It is on 18 May at Boulcotts Farm Golf Club at 6.30pm. Pay as you go for food and fluid. More details on this at our Meeting on Wednesday.

With early starts being regular for members, no doubt many will be attending ANZAC Dawn Commemorations…or not, if preparing for the next morning to hear Aleisha Amohia speak on Diversity and inclusion in all spaces, but especially technology.
There will also be updates from our Club’s last Board Meeting and other activities, including the Zealandia project.
Sue Barker is the director of Sue Barker Charities Law, a boutique law firm based in Wellington, specialising in charities law and public tax law. She spoke to our Club on 12 April about the review of the Charities Act 2005, and what this could mean for NZ Charities moving forward.
This week (5 April) we had a visit from DG Marilyn Stevens, and then a poignant presentation by Peter Whittington on the devastating consequences of Cyclone Gabrielle on his business and the wider Hawkes Bay community.
