Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 23rd August 2018
  President's Message

23 August 2018

As I write this, we have received over 30 responses to the Board’s recommendation. Thank you for being actively engaged in this process and contributing ideas to assist with our club operations. Whilst this has been an important matter, it will be good to reach a conclusion so that we can focus on the great projects and events coming up over the next 4 months before Christmas!

They are activities which showcase who we are, what we do , how we connect with and inspire others in the community - street appeals for charities - blood pressure checks - Friday Frolics - interviews for the National Science Forum - support for underground market buskers - Kahurangi After school sports programme - Goal Setter applications to review - progress with waterfront projects - support for a refugee family - Perambulator walks and much more!

I’m looking forward to all the events and activities we have coming up. For many of them, we can invite prospective members along as well.

Enjoy the weekend coming up!

Bev

Resignation of Stuart Young

Sadly we have received Stuart’s resignation. At 83 years of age, Stuart can be justified in deciding that 6am starts on a Monday morning are becoming a bit too much! Stuart has been a dedicated member of Port Nich. for nearly 28 years and many more years as a Rotarian, first joining Eastern Suburbs Rotary. I recall some 7 or 8 years ago becoming aware of Stuart’s contribution to our Goal Setter Awards. Each year he helped to review more than 80 student applications before short-listing these down to a manageable number to interview. Our longstanding members will have more memories of Stuart’s contribution to our club.

I just have to add, no-one has ever topped the excellent Spanakopita pie which Jenny shared on the Baring Head hillside during one of our Perambulator walks in 2011. The shared lunch was a Bacon and Egg pie bake-off competition. Forget the debate on whether peas should be added.  Jenny’s pie took the competition to another level!

We will be getting together over a coffee and brunch on Sunday 9 September to catch-up with Stuart and Jenny. I hope many of you will be available to join them. More details to come.

It is good to know both Stuart and Jenny have joined the Eastern Suburbs Probus Club. There is always an open invitation for you to continue to join us at club events as well.

BEN BAKER PLAYING IN WELLINGTON!

Our Honorary Club Member and great friend, Ben Baker, is playing in a one-off concert in Wellington by invitation of the NZ Trio!

A special PROMO code for a 10% discount for the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson members has been set up.   The code is RCPN10 and here's the link:

NZTrio's exciting new era continues with another exceptional ensemble of musicians.
Come and hear Ashley Brown (cello) and guests, Benjamin Baker (violin) and Stephen De Pledge (piano) at their upcoming concert BRAID, City Gallery Wellington, Wednesday 26th September, 7pm.

In recognition of the 125th anniversary celebration for women's suffrage in New Zealand, BRAID unleashes an all-female cast of composers.  These remarkable women are represented in this powerful tribute by a perfect tangle of traits - enigma in the Clement (NZ), protective embrace in the Kelly (NZ), enduring strength in the Kats-Chernin (Aus), compassion in the Schumann (Ger) and emotional wisdom in the Mendelssohn (Ger).

Complimentary Mt Brown Estates wine and nibbles follow the concert.
Here's the full programme to whet your appetite:

BRAID, City Gallery Wellington, Wednesday 26th September, 7pm:

Rachel Clement (NZ): Shifting States: Sabbia (Sand)
Fanny Mendelssohn (Ger): Piano Trio in D minor
Elena Kats-Chernin (Aus): Spirit and the Maiden
** Interval**
Victoria Kelly (NZ): Sono
Clara Schumann (Ger): Piano Trio in G minor

Seating is very limited – booking as soon as possible is recommended.

Dear Rotarians

I am asking your assistance for INTERACT who are joining with the International Committee at Wellington College to run a QUIZ night in early September. This will raise funds for the Blue Dragon Charity in Vietnam.

The Blue Dragon Charity rescues children off the street from slavery. Both Wellington College and Wellington Girls College students have visited the charity in Vietnam, and the young founder has recently visited New Zealand.

INTERACT need your assistance with information on those organisations (not RCPN) that could be approached to support their International service project with goods or donations towards the funding of the quiz night.

Please talk to or email Gillian Robertson urgently !!
Thank you in anticipation
