Early morning on Saturday Sue and I joined others in a bubble between Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia to fly to Melbourne. However, the night before about 192 people and I gathered in a bubble at the Intercontinental Wellington ballroom for an awesome fun occasion at our Charity Auction.

The spirit and enthusiasm showed by those who attended and participated in the auction last night more than made up for the disappointment last year when we were forced to cancel the event due to Covid-19. Whilst the final figures are yet to be calculated indications are that we raised around $45-$50k which is a fantastic outcome.

The Wellington Children’s Hospital and the Malaghan Institute as the beneficiaries of the event will be pleased with this result. Tony will update you in greater detail at the breakfast meeting on Wednesday. However, I take this opportunity to formally record my and Port Nic’s sincere thanks and gratitude to Tony and his committee for their excellent organization of the event and the extraordinary time effort they put into it, the gracious and professional service of the Intercontinental staff, the Rotaractors who assisted during the night, the very talented Virtuoso Strings who set the mood for the evening as guests arrived, John McBeth, MC for the evening, auctioneer extraordinaire Marty Scott and of course members who attended the event.

I hope most of you will join fellow Rotarians in our District to celebrate New Zealand Rotary’s Centenary Exhibition at the National Library of Wellington between 13-26 May. Thank you to members who have volunteered to act as hosts for this exhibition on 14-15 May.

I will be absent from the breakfast meeting on Wednesday 12 May. Our ever effervescent and erudite David Shackleton will stand in for me.

I came across this quotation from Socrates that I would like to share with you as we strive to find ways to serve our community:

“Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.”

To an amazing group of people

Feel like a bit of a zombie today, but hard to wipe the smile off my face thinking of the tremendous occasion in the InterContinental Ballroom last night.

A heap of wonderful feedback already, but I would like to highlight the following :

1. 192 people had a great night and it was a really fun occasion with a bubbly atmosphere. Guests really had a party! People were keen to stay on at the end.

2. The InterContinental and their staff were a delight to work with, patient, endlessly accommodating and professional.

3. The meal was superb and again up to the hotel’s very high standards.

4. Our MC and Auctioneer, John McBeth and Marty Scott, contributed a great deal with their extrovert and fun personalities.

John McBeth, the MC for the evening

Marty Scott - the Auctioneer for the evening

5. We ran to time and the every item of the program was given the appropriate emphasis.

6. The Virtuoso Strings were stunning once again and set the tone for a memorable evening.

7. All 50 mystery balloons sold and 53x$50 raffle tickets!

8. The PR, and general press around the night regarding The Children’s Hospital, the Malaghan and our Rotary club will have very strong and positive vibes around Wellington and you can’t put a $ figure on that!

9. Our final figure which will be somewhere between $45 and $50K is realistic and we should also be very pleased with this. The difference now in the COVID-19 landscape is no overseas trips. Remember how one item, the Bali week, used to fetch $10K just by itself. So I am pleased and there some very generous bidders last night.

10. The most important and personal point for me has two parts to it. Firstly I am very proud of our Port Nicholson Rotary Club for how hard we work to make a difference in the community. The second point is that we have great pleasure doing it and really enjoy each other’s company. Many of my memories will be of the work we have done together since November 2021 and I really value our friendship. It has been a privilege to lead the Fundraising Committee over the last three years and special thanks for all the help which you have so cleverly and willingly given me.

11. Postscript.
Paula has graciously agreed to be the figurehead next year. I know that we will be keeping most of our group together, displaying our characteristic team dynamic giving her our every support.

PPS
Will be at Rotary on Wednesday and then Australia-bound for 2 months on Friday. Will look forward to keeping in touch of course!

Yours humbly

Tree Planting
13 June 1pm
Let’s help our planet

The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve.

Our goal is to build on what we have done in previous years and continue planting native trees in Tawa.  This is helping to regenerate our native Bush to provide habitat and food for the increasing numbers of native birds, to make lovely walking areas for us all, and to help slow down global warming.  Interact and Rotaract members are also welcome to join us!  We had a huge turnout from Rotaract last year and together we planted our
500 trees in record time!

If you would like to take part, please contact
Lisa King (lisa.king@treasury.govt.nz), who is a member of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating our Club’s participation.
