Earlier in the week I emailed to all of you the programme of activities on 23 October to commemorate World Polo Day on 24 October. Ride the train and bacon butties at the railway station should be fun activities so please come along and support the cause or if you feel like a day out.
Thanks to Ash Bhasin (president of Rotary Wellington South), free coffee at MacDonald’s across the road from the station – but only if you wear the polio red t-shirt! District 9940 has organised lunch at the Whitby restaurant at the James Cook following ride the train, at a cost of $39 pp and to hear guest speaker Dr Heather Battles, talk about her research into polio and the evolution and ecology of infectious diseases. You can come along even if you did not participate in the campaign that day and it is open to bring guest along if you wish. It’s a good opportunity to have an enjoyable day and meet fellow Rotarians.
It was time for our quarterly review of our achievements against the goals we set for ourselves for the year and we did this at the board meeting on 12 October. Through the leadership of our directors and involment of our members, rotaractors and interactors, it was pleasing to see that we are on track to achieve what we set out to do for the year. On the community front we have raised $21K for the children’s hospital and Malaghan, planted trees in Tawa, collected food for city mission, cleaned the waterfront and predator free to name a few.
Our connection with youth continues and the results of the member survey allows us to focus on how we can collectively make our meetings fun and enjoyable (speakers, socials, perambulators) and Port Nic meaningfully and sustainably serving the community and those in need.
On the PR front we are more active in promoting ourselves through social media. A lot of work goes on quietly and without much fanfare behind the closed doors on club services matters and that’s largely through the sterling efforts of, Paula, Linda, Peter, Darryl, Warwick and Brent and the support crew.
Our breakfast meeting on Wednesday was an occasion for members to engage with directors and the committees they are involved in to discuss current and planned activities. The outcome of those committees discussions is reported elsewhere in this bulletin.
On another board matter, regrettably David Barnes, who has been secretary and director of club services, has requested to be relieved of those positions, due to work commitments and personal reasons. Peter Whittington has been appointed director of club services. The appointment of secretary is being pursued. I take this opportunity, to thank David for his valuable contribution during his time on the board.
