Congratulations to Bev Lawton, who was named New Zealander of the Year. This is wonderful recognition of her years of work in the sphere of women’s health. Steve and Bev are overseas at present, when they return we can congratulate her in person. Congratulations to Bill for being a finalist. It was a very proud month for us all.

Well done Tony for your support to the Samaritans

A 12 hour walk. 71,770 steps, 54.82 kms covered and 107 circuits of Cello Basin Reserve.
Most significant was that $3000 was raised to support the Samaritans and Mental Health and Tony had wonderful backing from Rotarians, especially the Port Nich Club. Thank you to everyone, and well done Tony. We do hope your feet have recovered and you have had a lazy weekend to recover.

"Harmony for Hope" Charity concert is just around the corner. Close to 350 tickets are now sold, with two weeks to go. If you haven't yet bought yours, it's not too late! The Concert promises to be very special occasion. Click here for information.

Great value lucky dip boxes

One hundred Lucky Dip boxes are on sale for $100 per box on the Harmony for Hope website, where you can find all the details about the concert, and purchase your tickets. www.harmonyforhope.org.nz

The prizes range in value from $125 up to $1,800, with 20 boxes having a value of $500 or more. All prizes will be available for collection on the night of the concert on Friday 4^th April (21 sold already)

Ryan Donovan
VSA and RYLA

Ryan will have two parts to his speech. Firstly, his experience at Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) in January. Port Nicholson Rotary sponsored his attendance. Secondly, his 10 month Volunteer Service Abroad assignment in the Cook Islands last year. He will be telling a few stories about his work, sports and community events. This is another speaker in Youth Month which we are currently celebrating.

What an absolute delight it was to hear from the two students we sponsored to the Science and Technolgy forum. Thank you Rob for your support of these two, they spoke so warmly and so well about the two week experience, and about their planes for their futures.

Being a guest at the Wellington club

A reminder to us all. When we are at the Wellington Club, we are guests of that Club. This means, we must adhere to the Wellington Club rules.
If you are coming into the Wellington Club for a separate Rotary meeting, you must be accompanied by a member of the Wellington Club at all times you are in the Club. Please do not go into the Wellington Club without a member. Please also ensure that you are complying with the dress code of the Wellington Club whenever you are there.
Rotary conference May 16-18
Districts 9920 and 9930 are combining for conference, and have invited three other districts to join them, 9940 being one. It is being held in Rotorua on May 16-18. It would be great if we could make up a group to go. Who is interested?

Important Notice- Breakfasts

The Wellington Club has expressed in writing, their concern about catering for breakfasts. The chef is becoming frustrated with having to whip up extra breakfasts
when they have catered for the registered number of people.

Please adhere to the following points:

No breakfast

If you register for a Wednesday and signal “no breakfast” please cross your knife and fork in the centre of the place setting so the wait staff know not to give you breakfast. If they do offer you breakfast, please say “not for me”.
A reminder that no breakfast means just that, although you may participate in the coffee and tea that is generally available in the pots.

Not registered for breakfast

If you have not registered, and you just turn up, you cannot have a breakfast, and need to say “not for me” in the same way as point1, and you should also wait to see if there is enough seating before you sit down.

Always look for that second email, which confirms that you have registered. From time-to- time some of us forget to push ‘save’ before closing out of the weekly invitation.

These Goal Setter - Ki Te Ao Mārama Awards recognise tertiary students studying in the Wellington region who have shown outstanding achievement and leadership while overcoming significant barriers and adversity to accomplish their goals and education as a pathway to a better future.

James Willcocks CEO Predator Free Wellington (PFW)

With Miramar now designated predator free, phase two of the project is well underway. There is lots of information on the Predator Free Wellington website and you can see the boundaries of this next phase on https://www.pfw.org.nz/sign-up-phase-2/. This next phase is benefiting from all the lessons learned during phase one, resulting in some new approaches.

Spoiled for choice

This week we had three speakers. Two of them were Emilia Kostynchuk and Snehal Maram who were the two attendees which the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson sponsored for the National Science and Technology Forum in Auckland. Jaquie Harper the General Manager of the Innovative Young Minds programme was the third speaker.

Come along to this preview screening and enjoy an early evening showing – there will be spot prizes and other surprises. This is another Port Nicholson fundraiser event for Youth in Wellington.

6 month update from the Club's Service Committee

To thank you all for the great work you are doing in support of our local community:

Predator free Wellington: It has been nice to hear the stories about the ever-increasing number of native birds that are thriving in our neighbourhoods. Kiwis seem to be hatching everywhere and I think the speed of progress has surprised.
Refugee Pantry Supplies: The Refugee Support Coordinator for the Anglican Diocese of Wellington has thanked Port Nicholson Rotary, for our support in 2024. The Anglican arm of the initiative settled 97 individuals in 23 family units in 2024 and the Catholic arm will have done more or less the same number. Our own groups included 3 singles and 5 solo parent families. We settled three families of seven. This year the Club has committed to provide pantry supplies for the refugee intakes on: April, July, September and December.
Waitangi carpark: We received a last-minute request to step in on the Sunday 26 January market Car Part. Although David Barnes was overseas, he managed to secure a roster of volunteers to help out, raising $404 for the club, and almost $2k since November.
Tree planting:Tree planting with the friends of Tawa Bush is booked for Sunday 13 July this year. There may be other opportunities too.
Goal Setters: the committee is made up of Mike, Nicole, Hayley, Jeff, and Heather, all playing a part to make the event a special and successful one. We had five sponsors this year with each donating $4,000, and one sponsor of $1000
Jumbo Tennis (supporting Lifting the Lid): David Quinn and Spencer Petherick helped organised and won of the Jumbo tennis event this year (Sponsored by Bayleys Real Estate), with the Wellington Rotary Club on 7 March. Funds from this will be used to support the Club’s Lifting the Lid programme.
Climate Change committee: Jo will be inviting club members to join her for an informal get together to deliver a training course to enable club members gain a better understanding of the main sources of household carbon emissions, explore effective ways to reduce our climate impact, and reduce energy bills, food waste, and improve recycling. More info. to follow.
