Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 29 November 2018
  President's Message

It is heart-warming to receive acknowledgements for the contributions our club makes to people and organisations in our community, particularly to hear how we have made a difference to the lives of others who will benefit from a ‘hand up’. You will see we have received another acknowledgement from Kahurangi School, this time from their Chairperson.

This week I also received another thank you from The House of Grace acknowledging receipt of the payment and this message: “We are still blown away by the generosity and continued support from Port Nicolson Rotary Club.”   I hope our club’s donation will inspire other organisations to contribute towards their Warm Home Project.

It’s great to see we have over 50 people attending our Christmas event at Whistling Sisters next Monday evening.

See you there!

Bev

To the Port Nicholson Rotary Club

We really appreciate your kind donation to assist our Kahurangi school teams. It is so important for many of our kids in particular on so many levels to be able to connect with sports. The team work, discipline, fitness and comradery as well as being involved in activities outside the classroom so that they feel connected to the community. It means a lot to me both personally and as chairperson of the Board that Rotary has enabled us to say “yes” when our kids express an interest in playing sports – it is really fantastic.

from Cathryn Curran-Tietjens,

Board Chairperson at Kahurangi School

Guest Speaker - Nina Welanyk-Brown

On Monday the Rotary club of Port Nicholson went back to its roots and convened at the site of it's fist ever meeting. Nina Welanyk Brown President of Wellington Rowing Club  was the speaker and she regaled us with about the challenges and successes of the Club.

The first challenge that Nina told us about was the history of their club including, their building, which as it is a heritage building meant there is a lot to tell. Not in the least the fact that it used to be the old St Johns building. The difficulties with the earthquake were also a struggle as the Club had to work hard to fundraise and fund the strengthening of the building.

The Club also had difficulties with membership but have turned things around with some great initiatives around culture. Now they are pretty much full and it's a precise timing exercise to make sure everyone can get out onto the lagoon.

And of course they have been busy winning medals with 19 medals won at nationals since 2013, an impressive feat!
