We've been doing good things!

Here is our carbon offset certificate for the club's emissions in 2021. They didn't have any forestry credits available at the time of purchase, but we can hope to get some of these next time. Thanks to the working team and all Club Members who contributed to offset our emissions!

 This week:

Club By Law Amendments

At the club meeting on 20 April 2022, we will be voting to approve the By Laws that Mike and the board have been amending over the last few months.  One third of Club members must be present at the meeting to form a quorum and at least two thirds of those present must approve.

The By Laws of the Club are the rules under which we conduct the affairs of the Club. They guide club procedures, the duties of members and the board, election of president, appointments to the board, election of members to the club, method of voting at meetings, etc.

The existing By Laws were adopted following the Club's incorporation, based on Rotary International's (RI) recommended form at that time. RI has updated its recommended form and thus it is time for a review.
Please have a look at the amended By Laws and come prepared to vote on Wednesday.

Speaker suggestions

Skill Data Base

A database is being compiled of member attributes and skills that would benefit charities. This is entirely voluntary, and a great idea! Please send three skills you have (e.g. fund raising skills, plumbing, computer skills) that you think could help a charitable organisation to David Shackleton

Invitation to an experimental Breakfast
The Rotary Club of Karori warmly welcome club members to attend their trial breakfast meeting in the Function Room at Samuel Marsden School, at 7am on Tuesday 10 May.

The speaker will be Dr Danielle Shanahan, new Chief Executive at Zealandia. Dr Shanahan was formerly a Senior Lecturer in Conservation Management at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Biological Sciences, a role where she had a close connection with Zealandia, working to make Wellington a hub of world-leading biodiversity, conservation and ecological restoration.

Ed's family have rescheduled the celebration of Ed’s life to 3pm to 6pm on Wednesday 27th April at Cable Top, 1 Upland Road, Kelburn (top of the cable car). Come along for drinks and nibbles and to share your memories of Ed. We’d really love to see you there - everyone is welcome.

In lieu of flowers you might consider making a donation in Ed’s name to the Younger Onset Dementia Aotearoa Trust (YODAT). They do great work supporting those with younger onset dementia and provide a day programme which Ed attended and very much enjoyed.

In case you missed it...

Gregory Fortuin - 20 times RYLA presenter
Gregory Fortuin gave us a taste of what he has been presenting to RYLA since 2003. He relies on being judged by the attendees to determine if he is interesting enough to come back...after almost 20 years of returning I think you get the feeling that he does a great job.

Member Profile: Kamini Hermon

Hi, My name is Kamini Hermon. I have been a club member for the past two years. I am a member of the Youth committee & enjoy my responsibilities with the Interact Club. I arrived in NZ in 1989, with my husband & two young daughters from Sri Lanka; which at the time was in
the grip of terrorism & war. Fast forward to 2022 & this decision we have not once regretted. I have since acquired a Tween granddaughter & two wonderful sons in law! My husband Johan passed away eight years ago. Before that Johan & I were able to build a great life in our new homeland. I now live in the city, in an apartment overlooking Wellington harbour. Until just over two years ago, I lived in the suburbs. Once I sold my Montessori school in Johnsonville, I was looking for a change. The decision to move closer to family & being able to walk almost everywhere, has been the best! Retirement is a truly exciting chapter. My diary is full of appointments that I look forward to! Spending time with my granddaughter Isabelle, Pilates, the gym, walking, attending NZSO concerts, meeting up with friends for a meal or a movie are high on the list. Family means everything to me. Besides my immediate family, I chat to my two sisters & brother & their partners…many times each week! This is great, considering they all live in different countries. Before travel restrictions happened, I used to travel overseas extensively. Most times, I would fly to & meet up with some of my family or old friends & then we would continue on our adventures. This time will come back one day… In the meantime, I count my blessings.

Club Trivia

...It's in this picture?

From the president..

I would like to wish Club members a great Easter Break. Its been a tough time of late and you all deserve a break. With the School holidays, our family are travelling down to Twizel in the South Island to see our eldest son, who started his first job in January with the Department of Conservation, tracking ferel cats with tracking collars. As a result, I’m pleased to say that Mike Selvaduri will be leading the club on Wednesday. I hope you all stay well, and I will see you on 27 April.

Moving to the COVID Orange Traffic Light setting

Our club meeting venue, the Wellington Club, have let us know that now the Country has moved into the Orange Traffic Light setting for COVID, while it strongly recommends that members and guests visiting the Club are fully vaccinated and boosted, this will no longer be actively monitored. Masks are still mandatory for all front-facing staff and the Club encourages members and guests to continue to wear masks when moving around the Club, however, this is no longer mandatory. Their COVID Tracer QR codes will remain in place throughout the Club for guests who wish to continue scanning for their own, and others, peace of mind.
