It was just lovely to have Bishop Eleanor Sanderson as our guest speaker this week, particularly as she is a former member for the club. There’d been a bit of to-ing and fro-ing to find a suitable date, and in her presentation, Eleanor alluded to Monday being her day off. I had forgotten that was the standard practice in the various Christian Churches. After a typically busy weekend, Monday was traditionally “parson’s day off.”
Interesting too for us to meet in a different place. Thanks to Warwick Bell for his brief history of the place and to David Shackleton for arranging it. I can recall having lunch there one day in the 1980s when it was still a gentlemen’s club (although it admitted women), and to attending various Chamber of Commerce functions there more recently.
It was once the premier club in Wellington and it was where the farming leaders stayed when they came to town. They went from the club to the Dominion Farmers’ Building (where Linda Wellington has her office) and from there it was only a short walk to Parliament to tell the government of the day what they were to do. (The Wellington Club on the Terrace was formed by a breakaway group of rebels dissatisfied with the Wellesley Club.)
I thought that it worked as a venue for us: the food was good, the toast was cooked and there was tea and coffee beforehand. More people to a table might be a good idea if we need to go there again. I welcome members’ thoughts on the matter.
Next up we have the evening with the NASA scientists on 20 June, and then the Interact Club is holding a fund raiser to raise monies for Dementia Wellington on Thursday June 21st. Join them for a special screening of “Oceans 8” at the Penthouse Cinema in Brooklyn.
Speaking of service well done to Lisa and the other tree planters who managed to get 500 trees planted in an afternoon. Excellent work!
