News item from New Zealand 100 years ago:
Waikato times, 15 August 2021:
More than pleased with Drinko treatment.
“I gave my husband all the Drinko Powders, and I am pleased to say he has not touched a drop of strong dink for six weeks. I am more than pleased, for my husband was a very heavy drinker. I shall recommend Drinko to anyone I know.” So writes “A.L” from Auckland. Drinko cure is undoubtedly a permanent cure. Cases have been shown where men living and working in a bad environment, with same temptations, have had no desire for strong drink at all. Drinko can be given secretly. Write for free booklet to Lady Manager, Drinko Proprietary 212W, Lambton Quey, Wellington.
As Tony was away in Australia at Changeover, Past President Mike Selvadurai presented Tony with his Paul Harris Award at the meeting. Tony was the Director and Chairman of the Projects committee for the last three years and was the power behind the success of the Charity Auctions and the Raffle (during Covid times) raising money for the Malaghan Institute and the Wellington Children's Hospital.
Congratulations Tony

Guest Speakers
Innovative Young Minds Programme
Jordyn Mokalei from St Catherines
Lillie Beliveau from Wellington Girls College
Jordyn and Lillie present jointly
The Innovative Young Minds (IYM) programme enables girls to discover science career opportunities and to build connections which will help them to launch their careers. That was the experience of Lillie Beliveau from Wellington Girls College and Jordyn Mokalei from St Catherines who came and spoke to us about their six day IYM experience.
IYM (residential) involves girls in Years 10 and 11 going on a six-day retreat in Silverstream. They visit scientists, research and tertiary science organisations, perform team problem-solving exercises, network and in the evenings hear from inspiring speakers. Throughout the courses, the girls meet women who are scientists, exposing them to female role models in science. The programme culminates in a reception at Parliament.
Both Jordyn and Lillie said the course exposed them to all the opportunities now available in science, opportunities which were much broader than they had realized.
Jordyn mentioned that she had not previously known about opportunities for careers in developing gaming technology. The course had enabled her to make connections between technologies enjoyed daily and work opportunities to develop them.
Both girls are involved in other extra-curricular activities. Lillie is a keen cross- country athlete and Jordyn is part of a Barbershop quartet.
Lillie was sponsored, through Rotary, by Rob Whitney and Jordyn was sponsored by David Barnes, through Rotary, in memory of his father Donald Barnes, who was a physicist. The Barnes family sponsor girls of Maori or Pacific decent.
We have been invited to the Robinson Research Institute , Gracefield, to
view the work they are currently undertaking on superconductive space
thrusters as presented by Jakub Glowaki at our meeting some weeks ago.
A ClubRunnerinvitation has been sent out for those interested. Please respond before
Friday 20 August
The visit will be on Thursday 26th August.
