Update on RCPN trapping and video surveillance

James is Project Director, Kaiwhakahaere Matua. He has led Predator Free Wellington since it began in 2017. He previously worked at the Department of Conservation for 16 years, in operational and project roles, and also led the national Volunteering Team. He is driven by the power of engaging communities to create outcomes that benefit everyone and our native taonga.

Predator Free Wellington set up a camera at one of the traps and James is coming along to our meeting on 12 March to show us what they saw and update on PFW progress in particular as our patch around Te Papa now butts up to the edge of phase two of activity being Mt Victoria.

Also PFW are to award Port Nich a certificate as a foundation community supporter of PFW so mark your diaries and come along.

President’s report 7 March 2025

Goal Setters - Ki Te Ao Marama Awards 2025

Congratulations and so many thanks to Nicole, Mike, Jeff, Heather and Hayley for such a successful Goal Setters event. The recipients were amazing, so deserving, and so humble. For at least two of them it was the first time they had shared their story publicly, and they were clearly moved. Nicole showed immense sensitivity and stood beside them when she felt they needed some gentle support.

Jumbo Tennis

This morning I went down to the tennis cetnre and spent a bit of time helping with setting up for Jumbo Tennis. It is a gorgeous day and it looks as if it will a good event. Bill was there helping out as a committee member, and Hadliegh (with little Harriet) as a sponsor. I look forward to seeing if we win the cup again.

Inter-Club Collaboration

On Tuesday 11^th, I am going to go to the Mt. Victoria Club meeting as I haven’t been there before. I am working with their President Lewis to combine for a meeting in April as we have both booked the same speaker, and she has asked if we could combine. A great opportuntiy for collaboration and fellowship.

I attended a Community Group President’s meeting last Monday. Here are some of the items of interest:

23 March is open day at the Life Flight Trust at Wellington airport. If you able to help out even for a short time, please contact Judith Gray at grayju02@gmail.com
15^th March is Wellington Walk for Mental Health. Rotary is going to have a stand from 2 – 3pm and anyone of us can go to promote Rotary. During this time, cricket notables and the media will be there, so an excellent time to promote ourselves. Also, of course to support Tony who is going to walk for the entire 12 hours.
Role of the Community Group Leader. Tony and his fellow CGLs are discussing the role, its limitations, and potential. They are particularly interested in talking to District about utilising a PR/media person so we can share Rotary to a wider audience.

Goal Setter - Ki Te Ao Marama Awards

These Goal Setter - Ki Te Ao Mārama Awards recognise tertiary students studying in the Wellington region who have shown outstanding achievement and leadership while overcoming significant barriers and adversity to accomplish their goals and education as a pathway to a better future.

Five worthy recipients each received their Award thanks to the generous sponsorship of: Kirk-Burnnand family; Mike and Sue Selvadurai; Nicole Barker and Mark Ratcliffe; Waterford Security (https://waterford.co.nz/); Darvill Mellors (https://www.darvillmellors.co.nz/); David McLay.

A musical way to support "Lifting the Lid"

“The Rotary Clubs of the Hutt Valley are organising and sponsoring a concert featuring Orchestra Wellington on April 4th. The purpose of the fund raiser is to provide funds to launch the Lifting the Lid programme in the Hutt Valley (see attached flyer) Click here for information.
