Just as we thought we were through the woods, here we are waiting apprehensively for the results of the thousands of Covid tests over the last week! So far the news is good but we are told that this new Delta variant is a formidable enemy described as the ‘fastest and fittest’! Be vigilant, QR code wherever you can and practice good hygiene.
Thank you to the 33 members who turned up at our informal breakfast at Leuven on Wednesday 23rd June. These informal gatherings are refreshing and a break away from our traditional meeting encounters. Special guest who joined was incoming district governor Mark Wheeler, who was impressed with the event, the turnout by members and the buzz it adds to what makes Port Nicholson Rotary stand out amongst its peers in the Wellington region.
On Tuesday 22nd June the current board held its last meeting. We also had members of the incoming board attend as an introduction and transition to the new board. Our hardworking finance duo of Lindsay and Peter confirmed that the net proceeds from the charity was $40,975. It was resolved that $20,000 will be distributed to each of Malaghan Institute and the Children’s Hospital. This will be made at the 30th June breakfast meeting. Representatives from both will attend to receive and say a few words. I am pleased to say that the finances of both the club and the Trust are strong and both carry increased surpluses into the new year even after cash distributions to the various community and youth programmes which totalled $100,077 for the July 20- June 21 year. This includes the $20,000 we distributed following the charity auction raffle in October last year. The incoming board starts the year with a healthy bank account to roll out the programmes it wishes to undertake. Thank you to all members who volunteered their time and campaigned enthusiastically and energetically to raise the funds we did.
Our club services director, Peter, has communicated that Wellington Club prices its catering on meals ordered and if you register as ‘no breakfast’ that is exactly what that means and you are restricted to only liquid intakes – hands off muesli and toast which comes at a price for those who ordered breakfast. Wellington Club treats us well and makes several concessions in the service they provide. They have costs to manage and the last thing we want is a 2- tier breakfast price. Thank you to all for your consideration and support.
News from Yon Yi in London. She has completed her art programme and will receive the fruits of her labour at a convocation at the Royal Albert Hall on 29 June. Whilst she is not rushing to return to New Zealand for a couple of years the good news is that she will continue her membership. Travel permitting we may see her in August/September.
Please remember Wednesday is City Mission food day. David Barnes is co-ordinating collection and delivery and looks forward to your continued generous support.
If you have not yet registered to attend my final meeting as president on Wednesday and wish to, please do so by Monday. I would love to see as many of you there as possible, Covid -19 permitting of course!
