Rotary Club of Port Nicholson
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin 9 April 2018

It is always a pleasure to hear a member’s life story and the story Tamaris told was simply compelling. I looked around several times and members were rapt in silent attention.
Her story is written up elsewhere, but suffice it to say that coming to New Zealand at age 17, marrying, raising three children, and having a successful career first in banking and now in real estate is no small achievement.

There was no meeting Easter Monday so our next meeting is Monday 9 April when we will induct Tony Robinson as a member.

Rick and the auction team put in a big plug for items for the mystery boxes. Donations of credit card points turned into gift vouchers, or simply gift vouchers themselves is a relatively painless way to give.

Best of all (as Ian Paterson pointed out) is to make sure you come to the auction and bring some friends. It is always a great night out. Bid and buy; there are great items for sale and a wonderful spread from the very affordable to luxury travel in Asia.

Joy is also looking to sign up people for the ANZAC Day breakfast. A board went around, but if you are planning on going, please tell joy@prosperity.co.nz.

New member talk:

Tamaris Livera

Tamaris began her new member talk providing us with backgound into her home country Sri Lanka – formerly Ceylon. Sri Lanka, a tear drop shaped island, lies south of India in the Indian Ocean. It has a 3,000 year old documented history with its recent history marred by a 30 year civil war, which ended in 2009.

On December 26 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami struck causing massive destruction on coastal areas of 14 countries. It was caused by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake – the epicentre near the west coast of Sumatra. Thirty-eight thousand people on the east coast of Sri Lanka lost their lives.

Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth largest producer of tea and boasts the finest.  Its tea has a medicinal quality with four perfectly brewed cups per day recommended for helping combat indigestion and heart disease. Tamaris suggests Orange Pekoe tea – I’m off on a hunt this weekend!

The island is also famous for its gemstones – blue sapphires, rubies, cats eyes, amethysts and citrines. The blue sapphire in Diana, Princess of Wales’ engagement ring (now worn by Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge) is from Sri Lanka.
Monkeys, leopards, king cobra, spotted dear, elephants and bears also make their home on Sri Lanka, which has 50 national parks.

Sri Lanka has 61 Rotary Clubs with nearly 1600 members. In July 2015, Sri Lankan K. R. Ravindran was elected president of Rotary International.
Tamaris grew up in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka before emigrating with her family to New Zealand in her teens. Most of her career to date she has worked in banking with the Reserve Bank, Trust Bank, Westpac Trust – specialising in investment banking, brokerage, and mobile banking before becoming a Business Development Manager.

In 2015, she decided it was time for a change. She took a break, traveled and then decided to pursue a life time interest in real estate and is working with Harcourts.

Tamaris follows two guiding principles which serve her well in business and life:

The game is never more important than the people you play with.

Be the kind of woman that when your feet hit the floor each morning, the Devil says ”Oh crap, she’s up!

Tree Planting

As part of the District's goal of planting a tree for every club member, the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson have teamed up with The Friends of Tawas Bush Reserves to plant trees at the Tawa Bush Reserve on  Sunday June 10th 1:30 p.m.

The plan is to have an afternoon starting with a picnic lunch (BYO) and then to do some tree planting.  Afterwards we could do a short walk to admire ours and previous planting in the area, and Interact and Rotaract members are welcome to take part.

If you would like to take part, please contact Lisa King (lisakingaling@gmail.com), who is on the committee of The Friends of Tawa Bush Reserves, and coordinating the Club’s participation.

The Stroke Foundation is asking Rotary Clubs for collectors for their street appeal on Friday 6 April.

We’ve regularly taken part in the Blood Pressure campaigns where we work with St John to provide free blood pressure checks at supermarkets (that’s coming up again in October.)

Right now they want volunteers for shifts at the New Worlds in Thorndon and Chaffers and Miramar, and for Countdown in Kilbirnie.

If you can spare an hour or so on Friday 6 April please contact Robin Boldarin on 027 209 7044, robin.boldarin@xtra.co.nz and let him know where and when you are available. Thanks

Refugee support

The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson is looking to support the settlement of refugees that arrive in Wellington, in co-ordination with the Anglican Cathedral. Club members are invited to help provide dry pantry items for refugee families, roughly six times a year.

We have been provided with a list of 20 items to source for the refugee family's pantry pack, which work out at around $100 for a family of four, but if split between five, would be only $20 each, or you may have the items in your own pantry that you might like to donate.

The next family will be arriving in April, so if you would like to take part, let me know and I will allocate the items between those interested, and arrange to collect the items on Sunday 22 April.

If any Club member has any house hold items/linen that they would like to donate to the refugees, please contact Patricia Cooper (Anglican Diocesan Refugee Resettlement Co ordinator) on patricia@wn.ang.org.nz
