We've been out and about!
Makara Coast/Opua walkway – 8 May 2022
On what started out as a windy Wellington morning 10 perambulators set out to do walk the Makara Coast – Opua Walkway – Quartz Hill – Meridian Wind Farm – Fort Opua and Opua Pa sites trek.
The worst of the walk was getting out of the cars into a blustery gale but once the walk started this
seemed to fade away and at all times it was warm.
After a coastal walk, with a little rock hopping, we ascended the Opua Track up to the old Post Office telegraph station at Quartz Hill.
Along the way we passed some pre-European plantations of karaka
and some interesting wetland areas. The climb was ok as the track was a zig zag so took the hard
grunt away.
The walk back down to the beach wound along the cliff tops and got up close to the Meridian wind
farm, the WW2 coastal defenses of Fort Opua and the old Opua Pa site.
Afterwards we welcomed a coffee and toasted sandwich at the Makara Beach Café.
