It was an absolute delight to host Sir Anand Satyanand as our guest speaker and Lady Susan on 2 September and to hear him talk about ‘doing good in the world’ through the efforts of the Rotary Foundation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our members who turned up in record number and also to DG Gillian Jones, PDG’s, AG’s, members of other clubs and guests.

Priceless of course was to see Christopher Robertson’s face as he was called up to receive his fourth Sapphire Paul Harris pin and the District 9940’s inaugural Distinguished Service Award for his tireless and lengthy service to Rotary. We are all, as members of Rotary, better off that one amongst is recognized for distinguished service to Rotary and the community. Even better that the recipient is one of our very own club! A true inspiration to all of us. We salute you Christopher!

That leads me to what Aristotle wrote in 350BC:
What is the essence of life? To serve others and do good’
Service is a fundamental feature of Rotary and its motto of ‘service before self’ and mission to ‘do good in the world ‘are befitting adaptations of Aristotle’s ancient words even in the modern era. Doing good not only benefits others. It helps us as well. How, you may ask?
  • it helps those we serve in immeasurable ways
  • it builds better communities
  • social contact of helping others has positive effect on phycological wellbeing
  • it improves self confidence
  • it helps to counteract stress and anxiety
  • being helpful generates happiness
  • connects like-minded people and strengthens fellowship
Studies demonstrate that if we engage in a regular practice of kindness and gratitude, we carve out pathways within our brains that make us healthier and more emotionally stable

As Oscar Wilde said the smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention’
Be proud to be a Rotarian/Rotaractor/Interactor!

Please mark in your diary - 7th October our meeting (informal) will be at Leuven Bar

Stay safe

ngã mihi

Mike

Guest Speaker Report

Sir Anand Satyanand

Sir Anand was our guest speaker and the title of his speech was “Doing good in the World” Sir Anand described himself as a longstanding foot soldier and Rotarian he is a member of the neighbouring Rotary Club of Wellington.

He talked about the history of the Port Nicholson club and that the name of our harbour has become Poneke – perhaps it is timely to change our club name to include the Te Reo.

He also acknowledged that this occasion is to honour a member of our club so he talked about the Rotary Foundation and its purpose as a non-profit corporation that supports Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace.  It does this through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is funded solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share the vision of a better world.

The history of the fund involved a lumber and box making businessman, wonderfully named Arch Klumph establishing the endowment fund he is quoted as saying.  “Carrying on, as we are, a miscellaneous community service, it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world, in charitable, educational or other avenues of community progress, or such funds could be well used for extension work.”   The fund started with $26.50 and is now worth $1 Billion and funds or had funded Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchanges, Rotary Peace Fellowships, Humanitarian Grants Programmes and Polio Plus.

The Foundation is Rotary’s own charity with seven focus areas:
  1. Peace building and conflict prevention;
  2. Disease prevention and treatment;
  3. Water, sanitation and hygiene;
  4. Maternal & Child Health;
  5. Basic education and literacy;
  6. Community economic development;
  7. Supporting the environment
The challenge is that about 40% of all Rotarians globally make some kind of contribution, in our country, a much lower percentage contribute to the Foundation – that is both individuals and clubs.   Port Nich or Poneke Club is a notable exception with an enviable record in this activity with a lot being achieved locally as well as overseas, for example supporting Peace scholars and Polio Plus.  The latter has almost been eradicated worldwide except for Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Sir Anand indicated that the global health issue of diabetes, will likely be the next project for the Rotary Foundation.

Sir Anand thanked the audience and hoped that he has stirred interest in the vital and continuing work for good that is undertaken by the Rotary Foundation.

The Innovative Young Minds (IYM) Programme
The programme is designed to encourage young women to explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing.

It's a programme that that our club actively supports as part of our youth support goals. This year we jointly sponsored with IRANZ two on-line sessions to IYM. Karen Oldfield our speaker this week was one of the role-model young women who contributed to our sessions.

Covid-19 has brought new challenges to raising funds and organisations like IYM are not immune to it. The following message from IYM explains:

As you know, COVID 19 has had a big impact on funding opportunities but we are being innovative in our approach to this challenge.
We felt that it was some time for some FUN that would bring our faithful supporters together for a great night out but also, give us an opportunity to raise some money.

IYM, in partnership with Rotary Hutt City, have organised an IYM Quiz night. We have a professional quiz master, food platters, a cash bar and lots of free parking!

Thursday 24th September 6 pm for a 6.30 pm start
20 teams of 8 @ $25.00 per person
Venue: Boulcott Farm Heritage Golf Club, 33 Military Road, Lower Hutt

This is a fantastic opportunity for our club to  make up a table of 8 to pit its general knowledge against other clubs and have a fun time doing it!

Rob Whitney has kindly offered to organise a team or two if there is support. If you are interested in joining please contact him rsw703@gmail.com. See flyer below.

Funnies!

This is worth a read....if you missed it last week

Medical experts were asked if it is time to ease the lockdown.
Allergists were in favor of scratching it, but...
Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.
Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but ...
Neurologists thought the government had a lot of nerve.
Obstetricians felt certain everyone was laboring under a misconception, while ...
Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.
Many Pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!” while Pediatricians said, “Oh, grow up!”
Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while Radiologists could see right through it.
Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and Pharmacists claimed it would be a bitter pill to swallow.
Plastic Surgeons opined that this proposal would “put a whole new face on the matter."
Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.
Anaesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and those lofty Cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no.
In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the assholes.
