The future of Wellington weather
Thapi Makgabutlane gave us a wonderful insight into the science behind Wellington weather and what we can expect in the future-
Increased number of 'hot days'
Fewer frost days and less chance of snow at sea level
Stronger westerly winds
Wetter in Kapiti and drier in the Wairarapa
Thapi said we needed to speed up our response to climate change. “It is neither too late to take action, nor is it the case that there is no need to do anything.”
Wellington remands Thapi's favourite place to live, with the exception of her home town in South Africa.

Ben Baker
From the first time Ben was brought to RCPN and enchanted all with his playing and his delightful demeanour, he has achieved a huge amount. With hugely valued financial assistance from the Club and some individual members, to help him to train at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London, topping it in his final year, a position he also achieved on completing his training at the Royal College of Music, Ben was awarded the highly prestigious Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Rose Bowl.
Justine Cormack
An acclaimed professional violinist for over 30 years, Justine was a founding member of the NZ Trio in 2002. With them she playing included working alongside artists of other genre, in dance, theatre, singing, and other cultures – Maori, Chinese, Cambodian and more. She has also inspired many young people. We are very lucky to have Ben and Justine to tell us more about this and their careers and this year’s AWE.
Applicants are sort from suitable young people (18-24 years) for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award in the latter half of January 2024.

Ben Baker and Justine Cormack
A continual topic of conversation has been the strength of our speaker’s
programme, and on this theme there is a rare treat in store for us next
Wednesday 25th. Many of you will know Ben Baker who is actually a member
of our club, and he and Justine Cormack, who are both international violinists
of some note, are going to be our guests and play for us. I encourage you all
not to miss out on this special opportunity, and even better still bring a friend
along. I am expecting a large turnout for this musical tour de force!
Membership Month
Recently I have spoken about us having a membership month where we bring
a friend or guest along to get a feeling for the Rotary experience and what we
offer. Now that the successful auction is over, I am hoping that this can be the
next focus and I am issuing the challenge for everyone to bring a new face
along during the coming month. Disregarding the 8th November which is our
Club Forum, the next 4 breakfasts will take us up to 22nd November. We all
know that declining membership is the biggest problem for Rotary worldwide,
but I am confident that our wonderful Club can break this pattern, just as it
leads in many other fields. I look forward to bringing three prospective
Rotarians as guests on Wednesday to set the membership month going.
Wellington Heritage Festival
On Wednesday this week a group of us attended the opening function for the
Wellington Heritage festival which runs until 5 th November. The Rotary Clubs of
Wellington are one of the main sponsors of this important event, and if you go
on the Heritage website you will see there are 106 activities that are being
showcased. I note with interest that there are a number of walking tours
organised and the “Fabulous Carmen Rupe Walk Tour” leaving the Civic Square Sunday 5th November at 1pm is particularly recommended. So please support
the Festival and take part where you can wearing your Rotary badge front and

Charity Auction
The final amount raised at the charity Auction was just over $52 000. A huge thank you once again to Paula and the team for making it such a wonderful event, to all the members who attended and enjoyed the evening, and those that couldn't make it and contributed with auction items, mystery bag items and donations.
Bacon Butties
All the spots for the Bacon Buttie event at Wellington Train Station have now been filled. Thank you all for giving your time so generously- you will have a great time feeding Wellington and promoting ending polio on Thursday.
More wind in Wellington says meteorologist. Wellington’s weather is set to get worse as a result of climate change, Thapi Makgabutlane, a Met Service Meteorologist told the club this week.
Matt Farrar and a group of like-minded businesspeople, calling themselves Trails Wellington, who love mountain bike riding, (including members of the Drury family) approached the council about generating an asset for the city making use of the town belt - the idea is to create a commuter biking network off road.
